What did you do with the two quest ones from HWs?

There are at least 2 onions you can get from side quests in HW.
Prices on my world were around 200k most of the time. but they did fluctuate and sometimes were as low as 100k. Watch the board.
I've never been up to 11 million. I was hovering around 2 million when my choco was still leveling. It can take several weeks per level, depending on how you play. Like anything in life, it depends on your priorities.

This is a sore point with me. I feel like I'm being penalized because I don't want to spend all my gil on either buying the onions or buying a place to grow them, spending weeks doing it. It has nothing to do with any storyline. If I was playing for free, then sure I'll jump through your hoops, but I pay and although I understand I do this because I want to, I shouldn't be forced into "playing" an aspect of the game that I'm just not interested in, when again it has nothing to do with a storyline. I don't expect to have them just handed to me, but there should be more options for ways to obtain them.

Edit: I fell for the necro
The onions are cheap and you don't even need to bother because the Chocobo if perfectly viable without them. This is a sore point with me. You should be a long way into the game by the time you need to start using onions on your chocobo.
Also it's been a while since I checked, but the last time I had to buy one it was more like 80,000 gil.
I also think there's a point when you just skyrocket in terms of how much gil you make from things. I came across an early screenshot that (IIRC) indicated I had something like 5 million gil after a year or so playing, but I think I had 30 million after my second year. Something like that, anyway.
You're making more money from base duties, getting bigger bonuses from daily roulettes because of the level gap, acquiring better rare items you can sell. Also you can do treasure map groups and get a lot of gil that way.
Do roulettes when your class is in demand. Get more gil and materia clusters. Sell materia when it's in mad demand at the start of a tier, if you're no rushing into the latest content that needs it.
There are so many things that you can do to get gil while engaging in the main gameplay, not spending your time on niche content like gardening.

Maybe lucky but I made all mine pretty quickly, giving them to quite a few others for FC mates.. was even able to give a few out during the blue mage exp bug/buff thing.
Might sound like a silly flex I suppose but I just mean that sincerely as "if you can, make them yourself- with patience it's not that bad". Not everyone can though, if you can't then.. yeah 'oof'. Also I think ideally, under a more exciting system the issue wouldn't exist in the first place, they're clearly there to act as a grind wall and some other content could have been more interesting/fun (so I'm not saying 'it's not that bad, be happy' just.. if you have patience and a garden, go that route).
Really hope SE does something with chocobo content again, could use some loving. .
:O . . . me too. . .

FWIW, you don't have to own the house. You can use your FC house if they have one or a friend who owns a house could grant you guest status with gardening access. This is a sore point with me. Also, just to be clear, when you spend a couple of weeks gardening for onions you don't just get one onion, you get multiple onions. You can get all of the onions you need quite easily with about 2-3 weeks of work depending on how many plots you have access to. Another tip is you can save your plot space for crossbreeding and as you get the onion seeds you can use your indoor pots to grow them while still using the plot outdoors for the crossbreeding to get more onion seeds.
In the 3 weeks I spent gardening onions I got 13 of them. I kept 8 for myself and sold the rest.

What server are you on where they cost 500k? I can't sell mine for 100k to save my life.
... oh, you're in the past. Carry on.

I love to grow these onions from scratch using the 'costs me absolutely zero gil' method. You need a ton of resources though. The soils alone will set you back tons if you buy them. What's kind of a bummer about the onions is that you can't perpetuate their yield because they don't cross with themselves, but this is understandable.
Growing them cost free is a huge time investment within itself before you can even get started, so it is definitely easier to just buy the packets and grow them in some pots in your apartment, FC room, or home. I have seen some cases though where the packets cost more than the damn onion, which is really really stupid. It takes 10 Earth days to grow the onions.
Anywho, good luck with whatever you decide. Max level bird is not required, but sure does help.

well, onion take like a month to growth, so 500k is not too expensive
