    To OP:

I would suggest going to Ul'dah and seeing how the population looks there. A commonality amongst almost all servers is that the other starting areas besides Ul'dah are the equivalent of satellite towns. You don't necessarily have to create a character in Ul'dah but getting to Ul'dah to interact with your server's populace is probably the best advice I can give you with what you are trying to accomplish.

I'm on Besaid and there are a lot of people here yes. Besaid was designated as the unofficial roleplay server. I think a natural tendency for former XI fans was to go to Selbina. If you didn't find a lot of people on Selbina I'd wager you weren't in Ul'dah. You'll find former XI fans wherever you go just by the nature of the game, but if you want a server to reflect the "feel" you're looking for Selbina would be your best bet.

A Pentium III, 600 MHz, 128 MB of memory, 32 MB video card (I don't think this was even a GeForce 2 yet) ran vanilla WoW at 15~20 fps in Elwynn forest, even better inside the inn, facing a wall. Ironforge was death. The rule of thumb, if you could run Warcraft 3, you could run WoW.

Selbina seems to be where most of the real-life folks playing FFXI said they were going. edit: But I betrayed them all and slipped into Besaid.

Warcraft *used* to be "our" precious. Battle.net folks with their free-to-play model on Warcraft 3, Starcraft, and Diablo 2 who didn't understand the subscription based system. A good chunk were trash talkers, cheaters, aggressively competitive, but good apples mixed in too. The other population migrated from Dark Age of Camelot, the canceled Asheron's Call 2, or Everquest 2. Life was good. Then South Park touched it with their evil. Let forth legions of unimaginable chaotic beasts into our worlds. The RMT saw more souls to harvest and expanded their presence, both in-game and on the interwebs. And what was once sacred and ours, was... no longer.

I have not played this Abyssea in FFXI. But it *sounds* it was the reason that many have left FFXI.

And much like what happened to WoW when the new populace came in droves, I feel the same happened in Final Fantasy once FF7 came out and became mainstream during its time. Final Fantasy... was ours!!!

I decided to start off in Ul'dah since it's the main hub, so yes I been there and am there now. I just need to get used to the new FF I suppose. Like someone mentioned it does seem as if people are not so social outside of their own LS's like they were on ffxi so that might be the case.

One thing I will add is, I can not stand is gridania or w/e its spelled. I wish it was more of an updated or w/e version of sandoria. I understand it's based in a different world and timeline etc but having a more updated and or larger version of that or even junger forest ( I think was the name of it ) would be much better than a starter nation made out like some sort of maze.

Grid reminds me of the Bastok side of the highlands in ffxi or the jungle. We all hated that part, ya know the winding narrow path way to the beautiful open scenery but the only problem with grid is, that you go on and on and on with that narrow winding area never to see that beautiful plush open area or a REAL looking forest (besides a few open areas here and there). ugh, if they had to add a region like that it should of been way further off to the side or some island of it's own sort of like yhoator jungle ( excuse me if that is not spelled correctly lol).

Anyhow I think ill give Selbina and maybe look for a social LS to start off. If that doesn't pan out than Besaid I think will be my next try I think. Let's just hope it don't come to that lol...

I will say I did just see one of the funnier moments in dang near most of the quests in most (not all) games.

No server has that much of an old school ffxi feel, we're not a real game YET, BUT...Selbina has a lot of FFXI players, my ls is almost all FFXI players and we aren't elitist, we didn't purposely try, it just happened that way. People count out Selbina and I have no clue why we're one of the most populated servers and we're filled with XI players and we don't have bunk ass prices on the MW.

Besaid has a very homey feeling. Rarely have I had any moody people in parties and people generally talk a lot during downtimes.
