300-500k is actually quite high and a basic number for an MMORPG, even 10k - 30k is a decent number if they're not spread out through 90 servers. Look at Maplestory, it's very old and still high up there and numbers because people enjoy it.

FFXI peaked at 750k+, it was always stable at around 500k for years. WoW was such a basic MMORPG and a rehash of what came out in the 90s that it was pretty likely to do well because it was the exact same MMO that you played in MUD/early MMO days. Not to mention you couldn't walk into any store or browse any website without seeing ugly ass elf or gnome advertisements, which is what helped the game's popularity.
750k is being very generous. I don't recall ever seeing a Vana'diel census that high.

And how many you interact with is a personal endeavor that has no bearing on qualifying a game's success.

All it really comes down to is the fact that 15 million people felt WoW was worth their time and money where 500,000 to 750,000 -- 5% of WoW's size -- felt the same for XI.

I'm not trying to discredit XI. I personally don't like WoW. I loved CoP XI. I'm just not under the delusion that old school XI design would keep the servers online for very long. I'd like to play this game for a while.

Besides, not having things in this game just because they're in WoW would be a guaranteed failure. XIV doesn't need to be a WoW clone but borrowing ideas couldn't hurt.

I mean, WoW peaked at what -- 15 million subscribers? Currently about 11 million. XI peaked at 500,000. XIV should be XIV but the devs shouldn't hesitate to borrow what works from other games. Obviously WoW just had more of "what worked."
a big part of why wow is so successful is because any computer can run it. i know people playing it on outta box $300 acer pc's.

About your post, people are perfectly social on Selbina. You are level 20, you just started playing that character. What were you expecting exactly? The game has been out for a very long time.

Even still there are tons of social shells on the server looking for people, including new players. The community is very friendly, and helpful. People on Selbina do pick ups for all sorts of content, so whether you want exp/spiritbonding or Ifrit/Moogle whatever current endgame content there is you are going to have plenty of opportunity to do that, with or without an endgame shell.

Level 20 is a little early to judge a server. There isn't that much to do up until that level, but I do see low level groups forming for exp every so often. Maybe you could try that to meet some people.

Though with the rate that exp is gained in this game, most people are not level 20 for very long. The 30's is a little better, but really the 40's is where you are going to start mingling with the bulk of the community and possibly form relationships with people you are likely to play with often (though sometimes you get lucky early on).

You're right it is a bit early to judge the server which is why I mentioned ill give it a few more days or so. I just don't want to find out it's another anti social server like my last one. The last server I was on literally killed it for me but I decided to reroll again especially since so much has changed.

As for leveling fast, that's no joke. I soloed to 20 in 24 hours and then spent a day doing some quests and wandering around the world exploring lol. Mind you I did this with out any real info or guides. I just dove in and did it. Probably should of done my research and looked things up, might of made things a bit easier for me now and then.

Yea sooo uhhhh any suggestions to the actually topic though ha...
Selbina wasn't always one of the most populated servers, it is now for a reason. I started playing at launch, and still know a ton of people who still play from those days. No other FFXIV server can compete with Selbina. It is a good community filled with lots of "old school" XI fans.

It also seems to have much better opportunities (in both volume and quality) for pick up grouping than other servers as well (possibly a combination of the population and FFXI mentality).

You guy's are probably right, I myself picked selbina to reroll on hoping to run into some other ffxi fans and idk maybe even run into some long lost ffxi friends. Sure it's only been a few days and like mentioned earlier I am probably jumping the gun... More often than most when I start a new game I do it with a group of buddies. So maybe starting ffxiv all over again on my own and still trying to figure it out and the mechanics of it is playing a huge factor in it. I am sure Selbina is a fine server and I hope lol i didn't upset any fellow Selbinaians with this post. Ill give it a few more days or a week I suppose and see how things pans out.

I do look forward into meeting new people and enjoying the game. The only reason i stopped playing FFXI is because it was so dang time demanding to do things and some of the endgame ls's was more like having a job than enjoying the game ( i know i ran a few and or was officers in a few which burned me out). If you wanted to progress or be of any use it would literally take endless hours. I don't mind taking endless hours to play ( which i normally do ) but to play endlessly for hours/even days on end just to get 1 item to make you of any real value got a bit old. I head they changed a bunch of things around and made finding groups and such and or even soloing things much easier on ffxi, but I decided to probably keep ffxi in the past and focus on the future which is ffxiv.

Unfortunately, you won't really find that feeling outside of closely knit linkshels.
The main reason being, there's no real need to form large communities to progress. Meeting up with strangers isn't necessary like it was in XI. Linkshels are much much cheaper and easy to get, leveling to 50 can be done on your own, the majority of quests require you to fight enemies far weaker than you, but luckily the addition of these dungeons and beastmen forts are beginning to require the community to work together, and unless you can work around or with your shell, you'll have to meet with strangers.

I find Besaid quite FFXI friendly.. maybe it's all the roleplayers or something. But like someone else said, the merge is coming and I am sure the feel of a bigger community will come with this.

And what comes to this "WoW had more players than FFXI yada yada" - WoW was C R A P that was advertised on every single media out there, for gods sake the latest one has Chuck Norris on it!
Good advertisement campaign can make any redneck in America and cellardweller in Europe buy anything that looks colourful and has chicks to talk to.
I mean it, FF series has some standards, WoW is entertainment provided to the mass... so no wonder millions of people play it... Just like millions of people watch garbage like Celebrity Big Brother and American Idol...

    Flame away!
