Which server has the old school ffxi feel?

    Hey guys,

Yes I am a NEW returning player from the beta days. Much like many other's I stopped playing and just recently came back to try things out and get into it before the 2.0 launch later in the year. So far I am really liking the new changes and I think ill be sticking around for the long haul. Sure I am a old school player from ffxi - server - Bismarck ign modz but all honestly this game is very new to me. Even though I been playing just about every mmo off and on for a very long time, ffxiv is def a whole new thing. I almost feel like a newbie playing my very first mmo all over again (sort of ).

I am seeking out a server that reminds me of the old school ffxi feel, ya know people chatting away and or helping others and looking for help. I have recently tried lstory and yea besides a random person running around it was or felt very dead. Might as well been playing a single player open world rpg.

I started playing on Selbina a few days ago and even though I actually see people running around and doing stuff " which is a shockingly nice sight coming from a dead server " it just don't have the old ffxi feel yet. IDK maybe i should give it a few more days or even maybe look into joining a social LS ( If I can find one )...

What servers do you guys play on and does any of them have that old school ffxi feel to it? Ya know the old days when people used to be a bit more social?

Again I'll stick around Selbina a few more days to see if things change but I really hate investing time and effort just to reroll on a different server later on. So any suggestions or advice?

No one wants this game to be like WoW. They just don't want it to be old school XI either.

Besides, not having things in this game just because they're in WoW would be a guaranteed failure. XIV doesn't need to be a WoW clone but borrowing ideas couldn't hurt.

I mean, WoW peaked at what -- 15 million subscribers? Currently about 11 million. XI peaked at 500,000. XIV should be XIV but the devs shouldn't hesitate to borrow what works from other games. Obviously WoW just had more of "what worked."

And how many of those millions of people do you interact with in your career on the game? Sub count honestly doesn't matter to player unless they're delusional that millions of subs = better game than those with hundreds of thousands. Farmville and Cityville trumps WoW in sub count, which means XIV should be borrowing from them, right? lol.

300-500k is actually quite high and a basic number for an MMORPG, even 10k - 30k is a decent number if they're not spread out through 90 servers. Look at Maplestory, it's very old and still high up there and numbers because people enjoy it.

FFXI peaked at 750k+, it was always stable at around 500k for years. WoW was such a basic MMORPG and a rehash of what came out in the 90s that it was pretty likely to do well because it was the exact same MMO that you played in MUD/early MMO days. Not to mention you couldn't walk into any store or browse any website without seeing ugly ass elf or gnome advertisements, which is what helped the game's popularity.

750k is being very generous. I don't recall ever seeing a Vana'diel census that high.

And how many you interact with is a personal endeavor that has no bearing on qualifying a game's success.

All it really comes down to is the fact that 15 million people felt WoW was worth their time and money where 500,000 to 750,000 -- 5% of WoW's size -- felt the same for XI.

I'm not trying to discredit XI. I personally don't like WoW. I loved CoP XI. I'm just not under the delusion that old school XI design would keep the servers online for very long. I'd like to play this game for a while.

The problem with FFXI was SE did not market it, personnaly I didnt know FFXI was around until I was at a friends house and he was playing it, there were no adverts in the UK whereas WoW gets hours of TV advertising, the main way to get people to buy a product is to let people know its there.

WoW even gets celebraties to help market it, remember Mr. T and his mohawk grenades? Which helps marketing alot.

To know FFXI even existed you needed to be researching MMOs or reading up on all the FF news, if FFXI peaked at over 5 million subs you would know people played it and didnt think it deserved the money, but because it peaked at 750k I can say confidently that people just did not know it was around.

So please SE market ffxiv v2.0 well and world wide, make sure it gets on TV if possible, to get people who like MMOs but don't keep upto date on news to play.

Btw I didnt even think "Where's FFXI" when they jumped from FFX to FFXII

Not to get off topic lol, but I agree with Sephrick on this. No real FF or FFXI player want's this game to be like WoW. Now like he mentioned there is nothing wrong with borrowing from a game especially if it was as successful as it was. Just because a few idea's may of been borrowed from another game does NOT turn it into another WoW Clone.

As for the old school FFXI players, or at least my own opinion ( and I am an old school ffxi player ). I don't want to see a FFXI clone either, however I would love to see some of the FFXI things added back into the game. ATM I am actually lost in the game. I am no game, mmo, or ffxi newbie by any means BUT FFXIV does have me feeling like one with how much things has changed and or how different it is from other MMO's.

I love the new changes so far, even though im lost on some of it and I can not wait for the things to come. However, right now my first few days impressions on 2 different servers is mixed. The game can be very intimidating in regards to the mechanics especially if you compare it to the old ffxi or any other mmo for that matter. Running around the huge world seem's very strange. I mean I run and run and run and I see people from time to time now that I switched servers but most of the people i see are all doing solo leveling or gathering. The mobs are spread out so weird on this game it sort of gives it a dead or empty feel to it.

I can run and run and run at times and hardly see any mobs or people for that matter with the same scenary at each turn. IDK almost feels like they just randomly dumped mobs in locations with out any strategic thought in the placement or with the dead space in between camps. Now on the other hand. The mob level locations are also strangly done. At one corner you have idk levels 10-15 ish give or take and then right around the corner there is mid to high 20's or even higher at times. That part of it just seem's strange. The old ffxi and most other mmo's the mobs level rangers were sectioned off more or less in different zones or regions. ehhh I could go on and on and on but im sure most of it has been touched on before so no need for me to beat a dead horse.

Yea sooo uhhhh any suggestions to the actually topic though ha...

Selbina wasn't always one of the most populated servers, it is now for a reason. I started playing at launch, and still know a ton of people who still play from those days. No other FFXIV server can compete with Selbina. It is a good community filled with lots of "old school" XI fans.

It also seems to have much better opportunities (in both volume and quality) for pick up grouping than other servers as well (possibly a combination of the population and FFXI mentality).

You guy's are probably right, I myself picked selbina to reroll on hoping to run into some other ffxi fans and idk maybe even run into some long lost ffxi friends. Sure it's only been a few days and like mentioned earlier I am probably jumping the gun... More often than most when I start a new game I do it with a group of buddies. So maybe starting ffxiv all over again on my own and still trying to figure it out and the mechanics of it is playing a huge factor in it. I am sure Selbina is a fine server and I hope lol i didn't upset any fellow Selbinaians with this post. Ill give it a few more days or a week I suppose and see how things pans out.

I do look forward into meeting new people and enjoying the game. The only reason i stopped playing FFXI is because it was so dang time demanding to do things and some of the endgame ls's was more like having a job than enjoying the game ( i know i ran a few and or was officers in a few which burned me out). If you wanted to progress or be of any use it would literally take endless hours. I don't mind taking endless hours to play ( which i normally do ) but to play endlessly for hours/even days on end just to get 1 item to make you of any real value got a bit old. I head they changed a bunch of things around and made finding groups and such and or even soloing things much easier on ffxi, but I decided to probably keep ffxi in the past and focus on the future which is ffxiv.
