One of the issues SE has run into with previous titles is building an engine for a title that is in development then having the next generation of console hardware come out and choosing to abandon the original console gen it was being made for and trying to tweak that engine to work on the new hardware. I think they did this on FF13 and FF15. This also may have happened somewhat with FF7's original release as well because I recall SE showing off 3D sprites of characters from FF6 in a small demo for the N64 before FF7 came out. The characters shown on that demo teaser looked to be about the same style and quality as FF7 on the PS1.
Realistically speaking, I don't expect any major changes in the 2021 expansion. Possibly the 2023 one. The Playstation 4 was released in 2013 but it wasn't until Stormblood in 2017 that SE finally leg go of the limitations of the Playstation 3. And if they really do port the game to the Switch, that could easily become the limiting factor. Also, most of the changes will likely only apply to the new expansion. I don't expect SE to go back and rework all the old zones. A texture scale-up is plausible since it can be done largely automatically with an AI algorithm. Higher quality models would require a lot of manual work, as would making the zones seamless since they're just not designed for that.
I mean, that's what I'd hope for, but their last move from an infuriating engine that badly slowed workflow (CrystalTools) was to replace it with an infuriating engine that badly slowed workflow (Luminous) and was scrapped in favor of UE4 after a single game (XV) and single rehaul (XIV) each. I'm not sure their pride could take another "Well, that was a mistake" short of starting a whole new MMO to put it on.
Maybe not changes but an actual new MMO... i am pretty sure that they will make a new one considering how profitable this one is for them..the subscription base will stay as well. They are upgrading majorly the luminous engine ... i think its for their new titles and new mmo..thing is... it might back fire from not actually having a new engine specifically made for Build MMO like games, dedicated just for their MMO title . Where there is big room for innovations.Realistically speaking, I don't expect any major changes in the 2021 expansion. Possibly the 2023 one. Sadly I don't expect anything major. Nothing was teased till now. The DX11 upgrade was teased months before the release so we knew a graphics upgrade was coming with the new expansion.
This time we have nothing. A DX12 port with some features on top of it could be possible.
The textures need an upgrade (they could always outsource the work on this as it takes time), HDR would be phenomenal on this game but I don't see it coming the way it handles lighting with each zone having its own unique lighting style but I hope I'm wrong on this.
Some limited Ray Tracing features could also be possible. Don't expect any major change in the gameplay systems.
A character customization screen update can also be welcome but their coding is a mess from what they say. The stubble they heavily tease and they still showing in their latest "How it's made" videos is still missing from the game and is a feature so many want.
They talked about working on the PS5 version of the game while the PS5 is supposedly backwards compatible so almost no work is required to port it unless they are preparing extra features for it.
I hope the next expansion brings some upgrades on the character customization screen, new graphic updates and Viera male and Hrothgar female.
The next Online FF should be sandboxed open world with no loading screens and all the newest tech baked in to ensure a better longevity (graphically wise) and way more gameplay freedom than XIV's limited systems.
Most likely. There will probably be nothing before the 6.0. Maybe comestic overhaul here and there but it would be too costly to make a big overhaul on FFXIV who use Crystal Tools with part of Luminous Engine (or at least is told to work that way). I expect a new game to be announced between the 6.0 and the 7.0, probably two month after 6.0 release, with some kind of teaser and the beta starting two month after the 7.0 (to keep people in FFXIV and make them curious about the coming MMO).
Since they have the developer pack for the PS5 and Xbox X, 2023 would give them two full years to see the real potential of the next-gen and familiarize with it.
That's only an opinion thought.
I just think the effort needed for an overall graphic overhaul of XIV is the same, if not more, than making a brand new FF mmo.
If I've been called for a decision, I'll surely go for the latter for more reasons than just graphics appeal.
Also add the InFamous games into the mix and the upcoming Ghost Of Tsushima which will be on PS4.Factually incorrect. I'll repeat once more: the only time XIV frame drops on PS4 is in heavily crowded areas like Eulmore. My PS4 has 0 frame drops even in the 24-player raids. You say GoW is heavily instanced? Fine. Witcher 3, SpiderMan, and Horizon are all big open world games, and they have stable 30 fps. No drops.
Again, not defending the Jaguar CPU, but PS4 games are optimized so well that they only experience drops in MMOs and online games when too many players are on the screen at once (hubs). But this is something that even happens on lower end PCs.
So please stop talking out of your arse.
InFamous or anything from Sucker Punch i have never had any frame drops
As for this game it had already been stated SE are working on a PS5 version, and later in the year (most likely next year) the XBot Crowd is said to join us
