I think the apparent need to be 'important' to random strangers is a little odd.
I care much more about my immediate family and circle of friends than I do about random strangers on the street. In the vast majority of cases, if I pass someone on the street they don't really register much to me at all.
I imagine the feeling is mutual.
Equally, in-game I don't really care about characters are do not belong to friends and family.
I also don't think it is particularly controversial for some players to care more about canon characters than other player characters that they do not know. There's a lot of people who are only playing the game for the sake of the story, after all. Interaction also isn't mandatory - even in roulettes, nobody is obligated to chat or acknowledge other players in any significant way.
