I can't even handle the basics of getting onto a ship. The game text tells me to talk to the fisher guild lady. I do, she says the voyage is already full - but there's a message to check back in a few minutes. With a Raubahn's Wall level crowd gathered around, it's easy to see the next 24 spaces will fill is milliseconds, so I say 'screw this' & leave.

Then guildmates tell me you don't have to speak at all to anyone to go? Huh?

There's more than once instance, this seems to be a common misconception.
24 people per instance, everyones getting on board. This isn't a situation where only 24 people of hundreds are going to get something.
