I have names of a few psychiatrists if you are looking for any. (All in good fun, your opinion is yours of course.)
Edit:
I COMPLETELY TAKE BACK WHATEVER I JUST SAID.

Kid: Mortal Kombat, on Sega Genesis, is the best video game ever.
Billy Madison: I disagree, it's a very good game, but I think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.
Kid: Donkey Kong sucks.
Billy Madison: You know something? YOU SUCK!
...Did they ever play FFII? Beating up your own players in order to level was the dumbest mechanic in a RPG ever.
But, I guess considering the state of the game its fair to say this was the worst release, even though MMO's are completely different beasts than single player RPG's. I guess my issue with this is that I personally look at the story, and for that reason I'd rank them as FFXII, FFXI, and then FFXIV.
Now, I know that sounds a bit crazy but realistically, EVERY FF game basically revolves around the idea of a bunch of outcasts fighting an evil bent on destroying the world, at least the 3 I mentioned throw in political intrigue and other unique plot devices. It's not that the other Final Fantasy's are good or bad (FFIV is my favorite old school FF, FFIX is my favorite PS era FF), but the plots are kinda the same with a different setting.
I haven't played every FF but I can agree it's the worst one I have played.
"bewildering number of inconveniences associated with travel" ummm. what? Anima..
New rules for this thread:
1) MY opnions: Facts
1a) Everyone else's opnions: BS.
2) Final Fantasy XIV is better than I, II, III, VIII and X. Everyone who disagrees with me, refer to rules 1 and 1a.
This is the risk SE took when labeling any game with a numbered title. Though the styles are different, they are Final Fantasies now.
I hoped Square.had called FF11 as FFOnline instead...
And call FF14 something like FF 0/2x. Where you have to solve for x to even pronounce the title.
... Sorry, cheezburger cats always make me get carried away. >.<
I actually agreed with IGN for naming FFVI as their fave old school FF title. It's my personal favorite out of the entire series. I loved the magic-meets-technology setting. The characters were very memorable, with more than one having a touching story that brought me to tears. The opera scene captivated me. I loved how each character had a unique ability or skillset. Leveling with the espers was a fun OCD activity. The music was very well done despite the limitations of the SNES - hearing some of it to this day (like Terra's or Celes' theme) gives me goosebumps. I've probably played and beaten it almost 10 times over the years. Absolutely love it!
