If they were scared FF7R sucking up sales, they'd delay it by a few weeks, not half a year.

Besides, FF7R and Cyberpunk have little crossover. Cyberpunk isn't a story heavy RPG like the Witcher 3. One game appeals to JRPG players, the other appeals to WRPG players. Completely different demographics.

FF VII sold 10 million on the original playstation1 and about 13 million in total, all digital sales from sony are apparently a secret and they never reveal that info and that is what I found in vgsales.com.

    Citation needed.

There are some players who will only play either WRPGs or JRPGs, but there is also plenty of overlap, as you will quickly discern if you examine responses to any of the "Do you prefer JPRGs or WRPGs"-type threads that appear on various fora from time to time, e.g.: https://old.reddit.com/r/gaming/comm...do_you_prefer/

That aside, I agree that it's unlikely that the FFVII played much, if any, of a role in the decision behind the delay.

There's a lot of people in this thread eating crow right now. Even CD Project Red knows that FF7 Remake is too big to release against!
Hardly. If they were worried about R7 it would be the delay of a month at most, not half a year into what is probably the worst AAA competition period. CDPR has come under heavy fire for unreasonable crunch (see the yearlong Witcher 3 crunch issue). I have no doubt the delay is exactly what they say it is. And is it a coincidence that delaying so far sets them up to be early adopter titles for the next gen consoles?

I'm relieved. I want to play the revamped version of Persona 5 which is out in late March, then a few days later the Resident Evil 3 Remake is out which is also a day one purchase for me...and then about a week after that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake comes out which I want to play as soon as possible. That's already a lot of games but with Cyberpunk 2077 being delayed at least that's one less game to worry about for now. Luckily it's my birthday in early April.

It isn't episodic in the same vein as like Walking Dead. Its supposed to be a full length rpg, just covering only Midgar

I do think the question of FF7R vs Cyberpunk 2077 in terms of sales and appeal is an interesting one, especially when both were coming out around the same time. FF7R is a juggernaut to be sure, but it may not have much appeal outside of the large and rabid fanbase that has already played it's original version in some form. Cyberpunk is by a much beloved company following up on one of the most liked WRPG series in recent memory yet it's under a brand name that isn't really previously connected to videogames and has basically nothing at all to do with the aforementioned previously released beloved title. It's also going to be more widely available than FF7R is. Both will undoubtedly be very successful but both have some holes in their armour.

But, of course, all of that nuance gets lost because of the obnoxious fanboy war between the FF7R stans and the CD Projekt Red stans.

Which is stupid, given how different each game is... I personally intend to play both.

And don't forget Nioh 2, which is also near then.

Personally I've seen more hype for CyberPunk 2077 than the Remake. Sure there is hype for both, but presently interest in CyberPunk seems stronger.

The FF7 remake reddit only has about 16K subscribers, whereas CyberPunk 2077's has 271K. Final Fantasy as a whole's reddit is only 177K.

I've been playing FF since the very first one on NES, and 7 is my 3rd favorite after 4 and 6. But that nostalgia isn't making me blind to present trends.

Again - not saying people aren't excited for FF7R, especially on a Final Fantasy discussion board - but Cyberpunk will probably outsell it.

I still don't think the release dates for either game are dependent on what the other is doing though.
