For something like this to actually work they would have to disabe everything to do with that city state for a hefty amount of time through the msq on top of creating a second sort of instance of the destroyed area in case any side quests tied to it and a destruction of an entire city state would have a lot of work needed.

It may very well require a time skip to happen to be plausible that a recovery was even possible to restore that city state back to its former glory and unless it was Gridania (even then I expect improvements to infastructre) I expect improvements so it wouldn't be a one for one rebuilding (else feel lazy and almost pointless).

This isn't something I see then doing 'again' and the reason it is in air quotes is while they reshifted the city zones splitting them up etc they are still close to their 1.0 counterparts.

    WOL answer =

Gridania is my home. I would be heartbroken if something terrible were to happen. Not really sure where I would relocate. Mayhap I would take house Fortempts up on their offer for somewere to stay if I needed it. Or more likely I would just see about a room at Revenant's Toll somewhere. At the end of the day all I could do is pick up and carry on. Help in anyway I can to the people left.

    OOC answer=

Things like this sometimes happen. The world changes, and reflects things like war. I would not be turned off to the game or anything, but it would be a little sad.

"You are just going to give me one of those stoic nods aren't you?"

    WOL = Nods

    (one of my favorite moments)

    I wouldn't feel really bad.

One of FFXIV's blessings is that "factions" aren't a core part of the player's investment in the game. It's not like WoW where your identity and 40% of the WoW storyline is defined by your faction identity. Nuking a city as a part of the MSQ is possible, and I'd welcome it if written well. A quest like WoW's "A Flicker of Hope" where you run around a burning city, trying to save as many NPCs as possible, would be very impactful. That said, it'd be pretty awkward to casually return to your nice and comfy housing block when only just a few miles away, the main city is in ruins or captured.

I wonder how many people would still be dancing in the ruins of Limsa Lominsa.

After playing through BfA and had to sit through the Burning of Teldrassil and the Sacking of Undercity, I can safely say personally the loss of a city in XIV wouldn't bother me all that much personally as I know no player would be involved in it. Hell if I had to choose a city I'd like to see sacked it'd be Ul'dah and their disproportionate screen time when compared to the other ARR city states spread around a bit.

For example I know a lot about Nanamo, Raubahn and the Syndicate in general. I know practically nothing of note about Limsa's leadership except what can be gleamed from a few of the city specific class quests, and I damn sure know nothing about Gridania except that the Elementals can be jerks and that's it.

We don't even know where the survivors are, or what sort of settlement they have. Surely the Redbellies aren't all that's left - those archaeologists at Issom-Har have to have come from somewhere more civilised.

I don't even know what backstory to put together for my Duskwight alt because someday they might finally drop some proper lore on us. But for now they keep dodging the question when it gets upvoted for Q&A sessions.

Gridania I haven't felt attached to in a long time, and I was really into it in 1.0.

I actually would be pretty sad if Garlemald got destroyed more than the Eorzean city states. The city States got destroyed once already, and we didn't really see any of that play out, so it feels more like a "Nanamo's death" moment.

It feels like, given the extraneous forces the heroes get to fiddle with on the regular(aetherial limitations, forbidden spells, TIME ITSELF), why haven't there been more disasters on our end? xD

That's where they'd have to enforce the separation of gameplay and story. If you suddenly disabled over 20 wards of housing across all servers, SE would end up with a lot of pissed off players on their hands. This is why I stated previously that they would have to not touch housing.

Unless I'm mistaken, the housing districts are not actually part of the city states. The Goblet for example seems to be a bit away from Ul'dah proper for example.

Now that said, a bunch of services like Crafting guilds and the like would you know either have to be moved somehow or some weird gameplay thing that states "while the city is gone you're still able to go there and loiter for reasons".

If they destroy the housing district too, it could be a chance to move to instanced housing like people seem to want. It may solve the supply issue (or not).
