Different people have different ideas of what's "efficient", or what they want to do with their time.

The story is a big draw for me, and being able to replay a particular part without raising a second character all the way to that point in the game (or paying to get them there) is a huge plus.

There are arguments for and against including rewards in NG+, and they've come down in favour of making it just for those who actually want to re-experience the story.

Just grab a couple of people and farm the lower/higher floors of Palace of the Dead and/or Heaven on High? Many of the items dropped by Hoard sacks still sell decently and the rarer Hoard items can even be over 100k on the MB depending on your server's economy... Plus, that Night Pegasus whistle is still selling for over 10 million gil on my server... Palace/Heaven are fast and easy gil for sure.

Likewise, other people suggested ventures for Allagan pieces, but you might have better luck doing quick ventures, which can turn up a lot of junk--but, if your retainers are decently geared--can also turn up rare glamour items and even expensive dyes. If you retainer brings back a set of jet black dye, for example, you can usually sell a set of two for between 250-500k, from an hour-long venture...

But basically if you're not saving for a house or sinking your gil on tons of glamour items and rare minions, you really shouldn't ever struggle for gil... The game provides you plenty for just completing basic tasks.

I don't want to barrage this topic with quotes, but I'd like to thank everyone who has given suggestions and insights here.

The two big takeaways I am particularly thankful for are 1) the use of tomestones for buying big upgrades at the applicable prior-levelcap levels and 2) the gold values from roulettes, which now that I've looked at them are pretty much exactly what I'm looking for here: Not suuuper high, but enough to crawl back into comfortably covering "living expenses" (teleports) after a big purchase like a house.

I just have one more question to that end, regarding roulettes. When I look at the numbers of rewards from roulettes, there's a gold value, and an XP value, and then there are arrows above them with the "adventurer needed" text.

Are those numbers the base value, or the value granted to the "adventurer needed?" If it's the latter, what are the values given to those not of the class that's needed in comparison? Half? Less?

An option that I've not seen spoken of is the Daily Hunts.

By these I mean the hunt sheets you pick up that are level 1, 2, 3. Each has five regular mobs to find and kill on it. With each kill you get 1K to 2500 Gil, exp, and Centuro's. Do all 15 and it's about 25K or so I think. Each expansion has them, so you can do a ton a day, and the income is nice. It just takes time.

Doing the Beast tribes is also a slow but steady income source. You get a thousand or so Gil, a tribe token, some poetics and exp for each you do. It adds up.

It's no hand over fist Gil, but do it for a week or two and its a few 100K and you get other things also.

You'll definitely get more gold per time spent from quick exploration. The normal exploration lasts 18 hours, meaning you can normally do only one per day per retainer. And AFAIK they can only bring bronze or silver pieces, worth 100 and 500 gil respectively. Heck, you'd get more gil just having your retainers fetch some crafting materials and selling those on the MB. Or if you want absolutely no interactions with the MB, the items from quick exploration sell to vendors for more total gil than the allagan pieces from 18h exploration.

MSQ hands you millions of gil over time. If that isn't enough level your gathering classes. You can sell everything you gather for a good chunk of money on the MB. Gathering is by far the easiest and best way for new players to get gil. All it takes is time and effort to product gil. Oh and putting in some time to research what to gather. You can easily get a million gil an hour from a max level gathering class if you know what to gather.

To be fair, I totally get this, and I respect this perspective. It's just... hah... it's so opposite to the WoW mindset, and I don't say that to be a bad thing. The first thing asked in almost any WoW development discussion is "what are the rewards for my time spent?" It's nice to come to a place where that's not necessarily the first impulse.

You will see people with that mindset here as well (most of them probably do have experience in WoW). It's just not that common as in other projects.
The game itself isn't made with rushing in mind - its weekly caps for some things such as gear from raids or tomestones is a good example of that. It literally says "stop there, breath, relax" (though a lot of people would disagree with me at this I quess).
Actually, I would say that if person likes and prefers to play fast paced (both in story telling and gameplay) games, then FF14 isn't their choice. It is slow, and not in a bad way, because in modern world where from every corner you hear judging "every milisecond is money, you can do more, more, more, live faster, faster, faster" being able to stop at least somewhere, even if it is just a game, is important.

Gil is really only needed for glamour items, really. Unfortunately if that’s your thing, MB sellers tend to be greedy and sell very expensive. The only way to make any real Gil is through the MB. Big Gil drops don’t happen outside of MB. Tens of thousands of Gil is what you’ll get, not millions. I personally find crafting and gathering to be very boring, so I don’t spend my time doing that. I’d rather be adventuring. I just wish you could make big Gil doing it as I do like glamour items which are too pricey.

As long as you can scrape by, probably with a little help to get to 80. I wouldn't even worry about gil. Also you might have spent 15k on NPC item but if you are in a decent FC someone probably could have crafted it if you have mats. They also might have the mats laying around if you link item. I have retainers full of items that are just barely over vendor price. Sometimes I just craft people the gear they need when hanging out at MB. It would probably only take a shout or two. And most mats have gotten dirt cheap. People don't seem to know what to do with all the desynth items. And it is too annoying to fight on the MB for a few thousand gil to craft it into something and sell it.

Once at 80 like others have said unless you need glamour, house, minion, or the shiny day 1 patch gear you will greatly outpace daily costs. Thats why people will spend 30 million on a new set of gear or 10 million on a new minion. They have nothing worthwhile to spend gil on.
