Meme about housing being a real end-game isn't really a meme in FF14, you see... It's quite costly (for the most part because it's popular so crafters can sell furnishings for quite high prices because they know people will buy it).
The normal house cost quite a lot as well, and you can lose for being offline too long or not visiting the house - 45 days of inactivity and you are homeless again.

But on the other hand, aside housing, there is barely anything you need money for. When you hit maximum level, the clothes you will hunt for are from either Raids or Tomestone exchange. And for Materias you can get items that allow you to get them from special NPC, so in fact you can gear your character almost without money spending. And speaking about materia btw... there are armor pieces you can Convert into one once you spiritbond with said armor piece is 100%. And then you can sell these Materias on Market Board. That's one of the easiest ways to get money without crafting.

Also something I thought I'd add:

Wouldn't the new game+ be a good source of gold if you just blast through and take all the allagan coin rewards? Or is that not something they're repeating in New game+?

One of the best ways to produce gil without the MB is treasure maps, where a full clear of a dungeon earns you 100k for an easy battle. Alas, you need to be running endgame maps if you want fast recruitment, and you still need to gather the maps or get them from Wondrous Tails if you are not going to shill for them.

There are no rewards associated with new game+. There've been extended discussions here as to why the dev team decided not to do that.

New Game+ is purely for story enjoyment. No exp, no item rewards.

    I... um... wow... Ok then.

I'm not going to derail the topic, but my time efficiency senses are a migraine at that logic haha!

Things you spend gil on at endgame:

    Housing
    Glam
Crafted gear on even number patches if you really want to jump into savage raiding day 1.

Its why omnicrafters make a lot of cash.

For drip-fed $, challenge logs and advenurer in need roulettes. Maps are usually solid too.

do sidequests. there's shitloads MORE free gear than you've been "aware" of.

like, so much that you can FULLY gear a job, with extra left over to sell.

You shouldn't need to buy equipment for leveling your first class with gil, ever. Not only do you get constantly new equipment from the main story and other quests but you can also buy equipment with poetic stones at level 50, 60 and 70.
The only dungeons in Heavensward requiring an item-level are the level 60 dungeons. You can and should have done your jobquests by now which gives you level 60 equipment good enough to clear those. Better yet, go to Idyllshire and buy Shire gear with poetics (ilevel 260, upgradeable to 270).

Like others have said, snag the tomestone gear as a good welfare option. They tend to last to the X7 level for each expansion, with X being 50/60/70. Since you're further likely to be grossly overleveling content if you are doing dailies, grabbing some cheaper in-between gear to maybe shore up those last few levels could be an option, too. Personal opinion, but Heavensward wasn't as good about giving gear for quest rewards as Stormblood or even Shadowbringers was. Of course, an unspoken benefit of the latter two is when you do get the tome gear, you could sell the gear you wouldn't be using for a little side cash on top. However, with the recent changes to crafting and how easy it is for an 80 to HQ anything under 70, those markets may also be minimally profitable. Really just depends on supply and demand there, with weekend play probably seeing swings in both. And if you're really desperate to save a buck, warp to Limsa and then transfer between worlds to check the nearby MB for what you need. It's possible to see some pretty dramatic price differences that way. Alternatively, make a crafter friend and just shovel materials at them for cheap/at-cost goods.

Something to keep an eye out for in the future would be the next Ishgard update. I'm not sure how much the rush has died down for your server, but there were crafts that did require specifically farmed goods like Bear Fat or Wyvern Skins. If those seem profitable, you can try farming that a bit.
