Odd, the only cash shop item I ever bothered with went in there just fine.
The reason that the Armoire hasn't gotten any love is that each item added increases the size of every character's data by a very small amount and those small amounts add up into a very large amount with 18 million+ characters. Allowing for the repurchase of items through the Calamity Salvager through achievement unlocks allowed them to slow down character data growth.
Most other games do not have the shear variety of gear models that FFXIV has nor the number of new models added every major patch. Checklist based gear glamour unlocks are not really viable with FFXIV.

I'm not so sure of that, there are even more "fashion conscious" games than FFXIV, Have you played other mmos? The reason that the Armoire hasn't gotten any love is that each item added increases the size of every character's data by a very small amount and those small amounts add up into a very large amount with 18 million+ characters. A check list system is more viable than an inventory system. The shear numbers on a checklist would make little difference until you got into numbers beyond what would be reasonable. You would have to have more items than the game could have.

Have you played SW:TOR? It has hundreds of armor sets available in the cash shop. Yet they managed to implement a checklist-based interface just fine. There's a "collections" window which records every cash shop item you have obtained (regardless of method; in SW:TOR the cash shop cosmetics are tradeable) and you can reclaim the items into your inventory at any time.
