A corpse animated by the WoL's aether. It's weird.
The enemy of the level 60 red mage quest is closer to a vampire. He drains the life force from targets, although he does it by cutting them with his rapier rather than biting.

I don't think the corpse was ever animated. It was more of a Fight Club thing, where the stone's Dark Knight souls interacted with your id, making you functionally multiple personalitied. Nobody else ever saw Fray after he died, the corpse never left it's location in the Brume. Except for maybe the last fight which could have been some sort of aetheric solidification. I'm unclear on whether the Ishgardians saw anything there or if they just watched you kick yourown ass.

At the level 50 quest, it clearly shows Fray's corpse being discarded, and they talk about burying "your friend" afterwards. So clearly the body was there at that point. Before that, it's left ambiguous, at least in English. I remember reading that it's different in Japanese, but I can't find the link right now.
