I feel like the only way one would be struggling to meet the comm requirement would be by not actually playing the game enough.

Over 2 years of playing, I've somehow ended up with (as of this moment) 1824 comms on my first character and 919 on the second one I made just before the 2018 Moonfire so slightly over a year ago. And the vast majority of my playhours are probably concentrated within the first year when I was still discovering the game and obsessively sampling all available content. Since then, my DF routine has consisted predominantly of doing 2-3 Alliance Roulettes and 3-4 Expert Roulettes a week to cap off tomestones and, if applicable, the occasional weekly clears of relevant Normal/Alliance raids for whatever tokens are available at the time.
Everything else I do is crafting/gathering, RP, hunt-trains, farming EXes in PF and raiding with friends, none of which are sources of commendation income.

Why is it then, that even though I've split playtime between 2 characters and deliberately reduced the amount of Duty Finder content I do to the absolute weekly minimum, I have accumulated 2743 comms, 1243 more than necessary, in slightly over 2 years, but allegedly some players who have been playing for twice+ as long and presumably with only one character aren't anywhere close?

Maybe I was born with it? Or maybe it's... my cute glams? That's probably it to be honest. I don't do much else to stand out, unless we're counting saying "hi!" when I enter duties and then playing to the best of my ability on whatever job I am (which for any job that isn't my main 3 means absolute garbage... then again, I suppose somehow tripping over the BLM rotation is impressive in its own right so perhaps that has earned me a few pity-likes?)

I feel like glamours would really have to stand out to be the thing you get commended on - though I'd love to have some way of tracking that.

I looked up how many commendations I have on my various characters vs how many dungeons they've run. For science.

Dungeon numbers are based on the count in the achievements list, which doesn't include guildhests (I try to at least do three roulettes weekly for the challenge log, more at lower levels) so the numbers will all be a bit skewed, but it's all I've got.

I also probably tend - but don't deliberately aim - to get "last man standing" commendations as everyone else rushes out the door at top speed.

    ---

    Female Midlander main (does everything):
    1697 dungeons
    1731 comms

Female Roegadyn (everything but primarily tank):
    207 dungeons
    424 comms

Male Elezen (everything but primarily healer):
    505 dungeons
    890 comms

Male Au Ra (primarily DPS, healer):
    149 dungeons
    216 comms

    Nerdy male Miqo'te (ACN/SCH only):
    24 dungeons
    46 comms

    Warrior male Miqo'te (DPS/tank):
    19 dungeons
    37 comms

Both Miqo'te alts got started the other week in a mad flurry of PVP grinding and GATEs as I realised that yes, I do actually want Garo gear for those characters I had in mind but wasn't planning to start for ages... So their counts are definitely going to be a bit weird with lots of guildhesting to get levels up from the first-time bonuses.

It's interesting that my main has a much lower ratio of comms to dungeons - though I'll guess it's probably due to a mix of running more dungeons with friends, joining groups to grind for mounts, and having leveled more DPS classes (thus more dungeon runs with a low chance of getting commended).
