Well, considering that Elidibus immediately ran away at the sight of Zenos...

Same. Zenos is a powerful piece for the Ascians to manipulate, and I imagine stroking his ego to believe that he can absorb Zodiark will cause him to work with them to release Zodiark.

And then it turns out Zodiark is too spicy for him and he gets absorbed/killed/whatever. Classic shonen tropes.

As much as I love Zenos I somehow doubt he will be able to merge with Zodiark the same way he did with Shinryu. Zodiark the father chaos is hardly going to let itself become the biuch some spoiled princeling...I think Zenos will try to fuse with Zodiark and have his soul torn asunder in doing so...

At the moment I'm more interested in what the Shadowbringers trial quest-line will be. In HW we had the big Triad hint in the final zone, and the Four Gods were hinted at on the SB map. But I don't think we've seen anything that hints at what the SHB trials will be against.

My bet after defeating Zodiark and Zenos and the rest of the ascians we'll probably end up fighting the source of those creatures that attacked Amaurot.

Yeah I don't think they've given any hints. We can guess that it's probably something First related. And that there will be three trials with possibly some dungeons mixed into the questline like with 4 lords...but I'm honestly at a loss.

My best guess would be the Magus Sisters, though I do like an idea I saw for fights against more artificial Ultima Weapons (like what Estinien fought) based on the other weapons from VII like Ruby and Emerald.

Yeah, I'm still entertaining the idea that maybe Zodiark is indirectly nudging Zenos into place to act as a sort of living avatar in a way that Elidibus or the other Ascians couldn't. Zenos is a lot more powerful now due to his resonance, but even against a weakened Zodiark I don't think it'd be enough to subjugate him. It very easily could end up being the other way around, which would give Zodiark more agency to take more active approaches to his goal, whatever that may truly end up being.

So, I gotta ask...it seems the vast majority of western fans don't like Zenos. He is boring and doesn't have any depth whatsoever. Do the Japanese fans like him? Is that why they keep shoving him down our throats?
