It was listed on the chart in the live letter as a "future update" along with the new Diadem and ranking system. So I guess 5.2 or so...

The changes so far to gathering I am happy about.
Getting rid of the dumb 'discover' mechanic when you already know what nodes they are gave us an extra attempt which is sooo nice now you get skills to proc now without needing to be lucky on if it was a + attempts node.
If you have the melded dwarven cotton / swallowskin set the facet gathering set is useless overkill.
All the legendary nodes were at 100% for me. In 5.0 they were 93 - 99%.
On an alt who is still in the yamashi set zonurskin maps, formerly 83%, are now 100%. Petalite is 100%, etherael cocoons are 98%.

SO.
1). Quick Gather DOES save lots of time. That 1 second or so that the game pauses before it registers your click is quite noticeable.
2). The Auto-Sneak is just so good. You aren't slowed by sneaking anymore and it's always up. HOWEVER, if you change to DoL while in town your Sneak will NOT be up. Don't forget about this if you go out after changing while in town.
3). As far as I can tell, the crystal yield skill does exactly the same thing as it used to, only there's 1 button that works on all crystals and shards.
4). They appear to have somewhat boosted XP gains, I was just gathering materials for my crafting binge and I gained a level or two on my 70+ gatherers today quite easily. Or at least it felt that way.
Otherwise, it seems to be pretty much the same as it always was.
With the big skill shakeup, this made a decent opportunity for me to go back through and basically reset/reorganize my hotbars on both gatherers and crafters.
I think there may still be a few gathering skills that could still be cut out, though, I can also see their purpose. We've still got a number of skills that are only good for a single gather attempt, rather than for the entire life of the node. I can understand still keeping those skills, pretty sure they stack with the better versions, and they're cheaper, if you're not chugging cordials or too impatient for passive recovery. Idk. I get it, but, they still feel kinda like useless bloat.
Convenient to have the Toil skills auto-activate now as well.
They've set it so exclusively-collectable crafted items are only ever crafted as collectables now, so, wonder how long before we'll see something similar for the gathering equivalents. Would be nice to know when not to collect a pile of something that sounds possibly useful only to be garbage.
Hasrat, the one-swing skills do stack with the all-swing skills. I was using King’s Yield 2 on the new ore last night, and Pick Clean, for 4/swing. Once my GP rose back above 100 using Bountiful Yield would see the next swing garner 5.
As for gathering ‘garbage’ ... you should be able to avoid that now. Item tooltips have the words Crafting Material on them when they are used in a crafting recipe - with the possible exception of gear, that is; I’m not sure if the low level gear that is used to make a stronger piece of gear has that term on it. But seeing as gear is not something you mine or harvest anyway ...
I like quick gather. Auto Sneak is nice. Not seeing much difference to Aetherial Reduction but that's fine.
Personal preference if that makes it worth it, but due to Brunt Force, extra GP and an extra gathering attempt I'm getting more than enough HQ from legendary nodes. I'm using a cotton/swallowskin set with no overmelds, just 6's in the main slots and have 100% gather rate and 10% base hq. I see no reason to upgrade, especially since my current set allows me to convert my accessories to materia continually. Seems overkill tbh.
I want to have Sneak's babies. I had a ton of fun last night setting myself down right in a mob's face. I went to Castrum Oriens and flew around buzzing the Groots and laughing because they couldn't see me or touch me. I love how I can freely run to a close node instead of having to mount up or sidle over under Stealth.
Then you pair Sneak with Quick Gathering and you're bopping from node to node in no time collecting tons of materials. Quick Gathering isn't a significant amount faster, but the value for me is not having the constant clicking wearing my hand out.
It also looks like they ninja'd in a change to proc rates on bonus nodes. I would see +1 gathering or +1 yield nodes back to back and more 38% gathering fortune nodes when before patch I would see more 5%. I'm not complaining, because that also helps with the speed of gathering materials.
