Genuine question for those upset with the new Mentor requirements

This is gonna sound controversial but it's something I believe does need asking.

Why do you need a crown symbol to help people?

I can only really speak for Cerberus, but I know from friends on other servers that the Novice Networks tend to be full of people who really shouldn't be there at all. From those using it as their own personal elitist linkshell, to those who - quite frankly - have such a loose grasp on the game that their advice is just plain wrong.

Mentors kicking other mentors for disagreeing with them, or kicking someone for being toxic and then getting kicked by the toxic persons friend. The Novice Networks are a mess, and I can count on one hand the number of crown-wearing mentors on Cerberus that are actually worthy of the title.

The truth is, the crown is nothing more than a status symbol, and one that has been incredibly easy to obtain in the past. I've been playing since 2.0 launch and even though I make the cut for the new requirements, I personally know players who started mid-HW and have far more comms than I do - and I main WHM.

I've met the requirements for Mentor since the day they were introduced, and I meet the new ones too, but I never wear the crown. Instead, I ask if anyone needs any tips when I see a "One or more are new to this dungeon" notification, when tanking I ask if healers are comfortable with big pulls, and when healing I'll let the tank know I like big pulls (and I cannot lie), and in doing this I end up getting comms even as a DPS. Because I don't need a crown to be a mentor.

So let's be honest with ourselves here. This was never about helping people. It was about feeling superior.

I genuinely hope these requirements weed out those Mentors who don't deserve the title, and allows those who do the chance to make the Novice Network the place it was meant to be - a one-stop shop for help and advice for new players.

    Cue the hate.

For me not sure how even became a mentor. But new requirements had that since heavenswards and for lvl80 jobs needed already have them. Think should need 3000 coms and 4000 dungeons to be one. Think they should have 2 novice networks to. One for the crafter mentors and another for pvp and pve mentors.

Dont think most people want the crown to help others... mostly maybe mentor roullete for the two seater pegasus
(i forgot the name)... i think this gonna be extremely frustating for people who are close on getting it but dont have the required comms for the next mentor requirement... just a wild guess though

Recently I started taking off my crown because the toxicity against mentors lately.In-game new players are told to look for crowned players for help and advice so it identifies to new players who they can ask for help tho tbh they can ask just about anyone or join an fc to ask.Sometimes I get a request to be invited to novice network other times it for other things.Besides what I mentioned the other avenue I have to help others is just go up and ask them, when they see a crown it gives them some sort of assurance that person cannn help them.As for novice network, i do not even go in it on my server it really an unmoderated cesspool and new players are subject to seeing it is just .. zzz. With savage content, fflogs and alot of wow refugees coming over(we all heard about that community) not surprising to see elitism brew and people wanting to feel superior and sadly yes mentorship can be the vessel for that.

I mean, it's been a long time since the game started. If you don't have 1500 comms, you're doing something horribly wrong and shouldn't be teaching people in the first place.

I can't even be mad, and took off the crown since Discord does the job better anyway with more accurate/consistent info with less risk for both the helpers and the ones wanting help. If they need the help I'll chime in, but it usually just boils down to players not pushing their OGCD buttons, which opens up a lot of the game.

But yea, from what I hear it's pretty consistent that Novice Network needed a hard purge, and probably needs even stricter requirements to be a mentor for PvE/PvP than what we're getting.

I have the DoL/DoH crown symbol on so people know that they are free to ask me questions. The crown should be an identifier, not a status symbol.

Can they access the NN and provide answers to sprout questions without it?

How can it be a status symbol while being easy to obtain? Any topic about mentors always includes comments like this and how mentors are worse than the average player. Both can't be right. I've yet to see someone show off their crown and anyone can look at the mentor requirements to see they're comprised of average players.

To whom? It's not like you had to clear savage to get access to the crown. I think any feeling of superiority comes from those looking to up the requirements and reduce the number of mentors. They want a status symbol but there have been too many bad players tarnishing it.

Oh, one of those. "I have my own definition of what a mentor should be and if they don't meet those requirements there must be something wrong with the system and not the values I pulled out of thin air". If they meet the requirements set by SE, they deserve the title. Who's to say you deserved your comms? Maybe you were paired with a premade and they figured comming someone was better than not comming at all. Cape Westwind and guildhest farm "parties" will have them rejoin the ranks in due time.

The same method for farming quick mentor roulette clears can be applied to farming comms. It would just extend the grind is all, though with the heads-up about the changes they can do both at the same time between now and when the changes go into effect.

I feel like the mentor system is a bit redundant, back when I was a sprout I asked most questions to my FC or LS. (I never was invited to the NN, took me 1 month to know about it)

I'm probably one of the few that do enjoy answering questions/helping newer players being a mentor. Though I have come across some toxic mentors in my gaming experience. You don't have to have a crown to help people, I think people just forgot what it really means to be a mentor.

You don't even need the Novice Network too, even free trial characters can join your own LS. (Up to 128 persons and 64 for each crossworld linkshells)

That's why I think the mentor system is redundant.
