Our avatar is a representation of ourselves! Everyone should feel free and comfortable with who they are in general and even in game ofc. We can’t fly or have magic power on “Earth “ but we can in Eorzea. If you want to be a lalafell nobody can tell you anything so just be yourself. If they tell you anything just bite their heads off (:

Personally I agree with the core of what you are saying, a person should play as any race as they want and no worry about what other say, but I do disagree with promoting the concept of our character representation of ourselves. Since I do not do not think many are capable of differentiating the two in terms of context. RP alone I have ran into far too many people that take a slight or jab at their character as a personal attack in terms of who they are as a person. The comment was aimed towards the character not the person, and I do feel people tend to assume when one makes an insulting remark about the actions of a character in-game they are in fact commenting on the person behind the character. Without knowing the intent behind the insult I do not think that is a fair assumption to make, yet it appears to happen often at the very least from my personal experience.

As an example as someone else mentioned how someone called their character a lalaphile, I have refereed to characters as such in RP, because all -phile means is a fondness for a specified thing. Sure in the context of RP my character is making an assumption based off the actions present, and being as the person they were flirting with was a friend of mine so I jumped in. Long story short moment I jumped in they got offended by my comment making claims like I was insulting them as a person, referring to them a pedophile etc. . . and I never said such a thing, and I sense they were projecting too much of themselves into their character so anything they feel as a an attack on their character is a personal attack. Just my two cents though.

Not to say that the person that made called the other person as a lalaphile did not mean it as a personal insult. and just as a insult towards their character or actions, but should one really jump to the conclusion that it is a personal insult.
