What is the point of fishing gear??

In the many years of Fishing i have never actually understood what the actual point of fishing gear is even good for... I understand what Perception and Gathering stats do but for fishing they are pointless numbers. With botanist and miner I can with my 430 gear go to an old Folklore node and boom it shows me which spot its at and I can mine it without using GP to show it to me now...

Why is it this doesnt seem to work in the same aspect of Fishing. Why doesnt our high Perception allow us to circumvent mooching or weather times. Logistically I understand that would in a lot of coding involved but tbh there could be a ability that allows you to see these fish perhaps they could call it Fish Eyes or something....

Ok so we dont want fishing to be easy or everyone would do it again i understand... However right now im typing this out of frustration b/c im trying to do the quest "Feast of Famine" in Urth's Gift trying to catch a Namitaro (Level 50 ★★★). Why have i used up over 400 Glowworms (yes im using the right weather) and i have only caught 3 Giant Takitaro (Level 50 ★★★) to spark the buff to allow me to catch Namitaro...

Giant Takitaro only needs 385 gathering Minimum to catch... Being level 80 with my 410 gear i have 1475 gathering... So HOW have i only caught 3... This is more illogical than failing a 99% synth 5 times in a row.

They hide so much for Fishing... chances of getting a certain fish, chances of landing that fish, and minimums to get certain fish.

Honestly, I suspect that the minimum and the maximum effective are fairly close together, if not identical, for starred fish. And once you meet the stat thresholds, more of the stat does little to nothing. Being undergeared precludes you from catching a fish. Being right at the gear level allows you to catch it. Being overgeared is effectively being just at the gear level.

For a Miner/Botanist analogy, imagine that your character’s level, and gear, are sync’d down to the level of the item you are trying to gather, without any warning of that syncing down. That is what I suspect is effectively happening with Fishing, which means you may as well be using a well melded i55 set to do that quest.

RNG is a bitch, that is all that can be said.

Gathering stats in fishing simply unlock the capabilities to reel a hooked fish in. If you meet the stat required to reel in a fish, you will then do so. If you don't meet the stat, you will be told the fish got away. On top of this, each fishing hole has a set percentage rate of each of the fish being captured. If having higher level gear made catching the higher level fish more likely (and therefore the lower level fish less likely) everyone is going to need various levels of fishing gear in order to optimise what they can catch.

I assume perception works in a similar way to normal gathering, the higher it is, the better chance of getting a high quality item and is capped at 15%

Using the Giant Takitaro as an example, it is believed that the hook rate is 1% so by the rules of probability, 3 in 400 is slightly below the odds but still realistic (and might I add, was the absolute bane of my life when I was doing that quest too, my partner got it in 3 sittings grr)

Just to be clear, you are switching to the Topfrog Lure once the buff activates right? Namitaro does not bite on the glowworms. It is still a bitch to catch though, no two ways about it. All Big Fish have a set max % chance to bite and to catch, and once you reach that (very low) cap, there is nothing raising your gathering or perception can do to change that.
