Deceptive only if you take the intros at face value I suppose, which I never did, and I don't think people ever should considering the HW intro.

Eh. I saw more or less what I expected with the Warrior of Darkness title. Remember that "Warrior of Light" has absolutely nothing to do with the Blessing of Light. The people of the Source came up with it because all they could remember of their previous heroes from 1.0 were silhouettes in blinding light, and they start calling us that when we do enough good deeds. Few outside of the Scions even knows about the Blessing, and the few that do are mostly high-powered beings like the Ascians or Midgardsormr. It's just a title for a hero who brings hope.

Personally I was fine with how they played it. I never thought we would turn evil or anything like that. I admit I was expecting us to find a way to tap into our own personal darkness to neutralize the light or something as the trailer implied, and was vaguely disappointed when that kept not happening, but the actual way it played out was pretty good I thought.
And there's always space in future patches for us to work out how to tap into that darkness ourselves to not just maintain our own personal balance but work freely with light and dark together. Which I would honestly find very cool in and of itself. It would set us as a truly neutral agent that is neither Hydaelyn nor Zodiark, and that could lead to all sorts of interesting things.
I didn't buy into the "becoming a villain" thing in the slightest and accurately predicted we'd just be viewed as such by a group of zealots.
I did however think that we might actually tap into darkness somehow as opposed to using our existing power over light to solve the problem.

Especially when you consider who spoke the line and the fact nobody else was even around to warrant that name being used.If the next trailer had the Warrior of Light referred to as "Elidibus", the viewers would rightly speculate at the implications. Y'stohla being called somebody else's name ends up being completely pointless to the story, so the fact that they put that red herring in the marketing makes it misleading.
Honestly, I'm offended you guys thought we were actually going to become dark aligned. You'd turn your back on hydaelyn's blessing just like that, after all she's done for your sorry asses? :v If it wasn't for her no one would have lived past the final fight in the praetorium.
Ungrateful WoLs, smh

My take on the opening/teaser cinematic is that we're being shown a sort of "what has gone before". The two most relevant scenes that support that are those of Thancred rescuing Minfilia from Eulmore, and Y'shtola and Urianger standing in/facing what looks like a burning village (it's the burned out outpost that acts as the first MSQ checkpoint in Rak'tika) with Y'shtola's line "Until our friend arrives, we shall hold the line." The "friend" they're waiting for is obviously the WoL, who has not yet made the journey from the Source to the First.
It's all sort of an "obvious in retrospect" thing, but I don't feel that it's fair to call it "misleading marketing". We *do* become the Warrior of Darkness, as advertised. There's also a lot still unsaid from a plot perspective. The whole Emet-Selch story arc brings some questions to the fore which have, to this point, been painted more in black-and-white terms or glossed over. Like the fact that Light is not Good/Dark is not Evil. That tempering may not be what we thought it was (consider that the player character has probably been tempered by Hyedelin and the Ascians by Zodiark, yet we've been told and shown in the past that the Tempered have essentially no free will and are basically puppets of their primal who will stop at nothing to ensure that others are similarly Tempered). That we, the player character, might have been one of Emet-Selch's closest friends in our past life.
I look forward to see how the story develops going forward.

I do wish we could have utilized actual darkness against the light. I didn't expect
us to go full on E V I L but I mean, when you have a WoL DRK in the trailer doing DRKy things
only for him to possibly go around consuming the light is kinda weird.
Like I said in another topic all we did was
Use light, to fight light and obviously too much light is a bad thing and the the bit of darkness
we actually really saw was night sky...That's pretty much why we're called the WoD I guess lol.
I felt like at least in 5.0, it was a missed opportunity I guess.
Darkness doesn't always mean evil.
I must've missed something but what was the purpose of her using this?
No one in that world knows who Y'shtola is but us and the other Scions so why use Matoya?
I think a lot of us was entirely under the assumption that Matoya
became one with Y'sthola or something and inherited her powers through that.
Really missed a good chance here.
We're still early in so who knows what may happen but still lol.

She used that name because As the Night's Blessed custom is to never speak their true names aloud beneath the light
The seas continue to rise while the lesser moon continues to fall, and ilm by ilm, the world becomes ever more unlike itself, without the illumination of knowledge, we but vainly flail as specters in the dark.
