Want to become a mentor, but I'm not sure if I should

By all means become a mentor but crown or not is it going to change the way you interact with other players in game? The main objective of mentors it to help new players fit into their place in whatever content it is, whether its crafting, gathering, pvp or otherwise. If you feel like you can be of help to these people taking their first steps into Eorzia then thats great, my advice would be to turn the crown off and when giving advice or help do it from a stand point where you are equals as being told what to do from someone in an apparrant form of superiority can be infuriating to some, whereas a word of advice from a fellow adventurer can be more receptive.

Too bad that your server's NN is not good, but on Twintania's is great; obviously based on only my experience. Offering "advice" in the name of some weird superiority complexe as you stated can also happen without crown *shrugs*. But yeah, I can quite see how NN heavily varies per server and other factors.
