It cant be all that different from holding W and turning with right click.Yeah... mouse movement and turning is better... I don't think anyone's going to seriously argue that. But the keyboard still exists and has movement keys. Presumably if someone is rolling on loot, it's a non-critical moment and they can move non-optimally for the literal 2 seconds it takes to deal with that.

The difference (in combat anyway, the only time precise movement really matters) is what holding W does to the availability of your left hand and all the fingers on it. Holding W means one of your fingers isn't available to conveniently press a hotbar key without weird contortions your doctor would advise against.
But there are times for everything. There are times it's ok and even preferable to do that instead of holding both mouse buttons (for instance when you need to click something else with the mouse... like the loot window).
Personally though, I use an Orbweaver and use the thumbstick for that type of movement.
