..."collect the orbs"? Are you describing things in an odd way, or am I completely unaware of a mechanic?

For the final boss he'll drop Buff Orbs that gives a stacking damage bonus to a player if they pick them up. If they aren't, then each lost orb gives the BOSS a stacking damage bonus
