I can understand if you accidentally swore when speaking, but typing has an extra layer of thinking about what you're converting from speech into text, and at least some degree of opportunity to reconsider and alter what you wrote before anyone else sees it.

If you know certain language is not allowed, can't you just restrict yourself from using it in chat, or substitute something less offensive-to-some?

(I don't ever swear even in real life - at least not in language that would be on the 'banned list' - so I honestly have no idea what it would be like having to tone down language in text chat. Is it hard? Really? Do you have to think about the fact that you shouldn't type that word in? I'm not asking this hypothetic-sarcastically.)

    Very hard actually.
In forums not so much but in live chats when stuff happens fast and you don't have much time, you essentially type as you would speak.
Add roused feelings to that and you will get rather ... fruity language quite often.

In forums I typically tend to write everything down, insults and all. That in itself consumes most of the negative energy and I can then go back and edit the text to be more presentable before hitting that send button. It's a neat trick I picked up from some other forum poster back at MMO-C.

That doesn't really work well in a 1 line chat interface when you type e.g.: between pulls etc, so you have to put more thought into the sentence from the very beginning.

Personally, I don't think the profanity filter is in there to actually neuter insults but to "protect" 12yr olds from mature language of other players so they can keep the age rating down. I deactivated it since day 1 because I am an adult. For me personally, it makes 0 difference between reading the word "idiot" in reference to my person or reading ♥♥♥♥♥ done by some funky filter. I know the person just insulted me either way.

Edit: before s/o gets the wrong picture and twists anything out of context: I have a 0 tolerance policy for insults in games. This is a hobby we all do for fun and there is no reason at all to be abusive to each other. I tend to be rather direct and not bother wrapping everything in layers of diplomacy though (mom calls me "as diplomatic as an ax in the forest").
