Retainer menu updates slowly

You have to actually call them. Just checking the retainer menue won't update their gil. This is not a bug.

Then it's poor design, and means the gil display is utterly meaningless.
Why only display the gil they have after you've closed the menu that gives you access to it?
It makes it useless information, besides "oh look, you forgot to check their gil."

Didn't said it was a good design. Just stated as it is right now. Personally I would prefer as well if I can just see how much gil they are carrying around without talking to them. But hey - They might adjust to this as well in the future.
