NOW can we admit that there is a healer shortage?
Multiple articles have been written about it. The issue is why...
It is not due to a lack of popularity for FFXIV as zones are quite active! And it is not because of 2 new jobs because not everybody who heals would suddenly do GNB or DNC. That is not realistic.
I believe there are 3 healer-specific issues:
1) AST 5.0 changes have made it far too similar to WHM. So if you don't enjoy one, it is likely that there are now 2 jobs that you will have no interest in playing.
2) SCH 5.0 changes have resulted in many of our hardcore healers getting bored and trying a different job in search of more complexity. Simplifying SCH and removing options is the opposite of what a down-and-dirty SCH player would want.
3) WHM 5.0 seems fine at max level. Rather, it is feeling the awkwardness that comes from the new 10,000 MP limit at lower levels. It is a terrible strategy to have a job feel horrible for the first 50-60 levels. I used to be able to throw out heals freely as a WHM in all levels of content but those days are over! Level 50 and under means no Thin Air and no Assize. Dungeons are fine but any Trials or Raid Content involve lots of doing nothing as healing on this pure healer will mean that I go out-of-mana quite quickly. I want to be a fountain of love and free healing. But 5.0 means I am stingy as hell as a few consecutive heals and 1 rez means certain death as I will have no mana left. The other healer is usually a WHM as well and they often run out of mana within the first minute. Of course, I am not a skilled WHM and I would have less issues once I git gud.
Regardless, this issue is much deeper than my skills and lack thereof. The issue is that SE has made Healer Roles exceptionally unattractive in an effort to streamline and there is a ripple effect. Ripple #1 is that I just went back to SMN and happily get to "heal" via Physick and rezzing while freely spending seemingly endless mana to cast spells. Now there is 1 less Healer queuing up for content.
My question to everybody: Is there a realistic solution that SE could roll out by the next patch?
