Certain stories can go into this topic such as a entire Civilization murders all Mages in the world and enslave the survivors despite the Mages were the ones who saved the world under the gift of a Goddess that blessed these few people with Magic while preaching how the Non-Magic user are now the Superior race for developing Weapons and high tech tools that surpass Magic thus they no longer need to depend on Magic users nor fear what a Magic user may do to them if they may turn evil one day.

Fear is heck of a drug into Madness and there is no logic in Madness, only horrible inhumane actions that sounds sane for the person consumed by that madness.
That only really kicks in when they would no longer have a use for us. When they are no longer under threat from a immensely powerful entity they couldn't handle but the Hero did then the fear would kick in by those who want to retain their power because of the masses who elevate the Hero who saved them and would rather have the Hero take over leading them.

Course there are some stories out there of nations turning their backs on the Hero after they managed to stop the evil Demon Lord. Splitting up the party, taking away the legendary gear, and sending the Hero on suicide missions to clean up the remaining monsters. Which often times leads to the Hero becoming Fallen and either turning into the next Demon Lord because humanity betrayed them after all they did for humanity, or falling for a trap of pleasure and their power gets fed to a demon who will become the next Demon Lord/Demon Queen and the Hero just ceases to care and lets it happen. You also got stories of where the Heroes get elevated and their child basically forced to inherit the title, role, and training putting them under immense pressure until they just break and vanish, coming to seek the feeling of family and friends with demons that they never got with humans.

Either way the isolation that gets put onto the Hero be it out of fear or out of a sense of otherness by the power difference can wind up having disastrous consequences. At the moment though we do not seem to be suffering from that issue yet because of a good combination of keeping who exactly is the WoL/D vague for the most part and the fact we have a endless chain of world in danger events to keep people from not needing to think about the power difference and start to get scared about what we could do with them when there is no more danger to distract us.
