Yeah. SMN could work in many, many ways, but the use of egi is the most boring concept of those usages, in my opinion. I would love to see them just summoning creatures for single-powerful attacks, like summons from FFVII or FFIX, or allow you to really change the way you fight with big summons (like the demi-bahamut) persisting for a few seconds.

Which would be fine, if it weren't for a couple of (lore-related) facts:
A) Primals are bad/harmful to the planet, and can't be controlled (with a few rare exceptions).
Hence how the SMN job serves a "work-around" to that problem with the creation of Egis and Trances -> Demi-Primals.
B) Thus far, Trances -> Demi-Primals are reserved to the most powerful ones in existence (those currently being Bahamut's and Phoenix's).
Creating new Trances/Demi-Primals is fair game, but getting rid of Egis is simply unrealistic for many, many reasons (having to rework everything related to them since 2.0).
And that's putting it mildly.
Also, again with the typical straw-man argument of "this iteration is not like in previous FF games" (in which case, every single job would have to change as well).
It's been around SIX years now. Time to let go.
