the only way to save the game (aka my wish never to come true)

In my opinion the only way to save the game is to completely redesign it. BUT you don't need to look so far for ideas how to rebuilt it. All you would need to do is ditch all the oh so new and great ideas and completely copy FFXI's current gameplay. ADMIT IT YOU WANT IT! Since most of the casual gamers who were the target group for this "new" and "innovative" type of gameplay (mess) we are dealing with now already left for most parts anyway. (and most likely will never return) So just give the FF fans what they want with better graphics. Just take the whole battlesystem etc. and put it into a new world.
You wouldn't even have to make up something new there. Just make the game part of the Ivalice Alliance or something alike and you would have a complete, highly expandable world setting with a working system which everyone who is willing to pay would love. (Just think of the racial options and so on but I am drifting off imagining a really wonderful game.. AND SO DO YOU ADMIT IT.)
Since FFXI always was a steady goldmine why not get everyone back and keep the money flowing instead of trying to appeal to and turn over all the WoW-loving morons.
Too bad I'm asking for the impossible: shut down the servers, completely ditch the game (heck I would even say its okay and donate you the money I paid for my copy if SE could pull off a game like I described) and make the game every ff fan would love.(which would take years again..)
Ah well.. the things that could have been..
I am prepared for the incoming s-storm of "troll go back blah blah" from ppl who want to justify the money or time they spent on obvious ... well whatever you wanna call 14. But I don't really care anyway, just wanted to share my idea, maybe there are other ppl who would like to play a part of the series they used to be fans of. To everyone else still defending the current mess: enjoy your leve quests on copypasted terrain and grind without content

funny you talk about the new fans that came in already gone. all of the players that i brought in to the game are still here minus 1. most have no mmo experience and would not get into the xi system. there is a reason i dropped xi quickly after i got it, but even is this bad state this game it is in i still enjoy it more than xi.

From all the FFXIV forums both this one and others it should be common knowledge that you cannot just leave a mmo when you do not like it, you have to make at least 300 post on at least 4 different forums about how bad it is once you are at the 300 mark you are legally able by western mmo law to quit the game.

    lol So true.

I don't really understand people's mentality... I played and quit both DCUO and Rifts recently, without making any dramatic hate posts about how bad the games were. I really hate the last generation of parents... they really sucked at teaching their kids anything useful.

this has nothing to do with posting or not and I have quit already, yeah. It's just kinda sad seeing a series you always liked (after years of anticipation) go down the gutter when sticking to the basics could've saved so much.. but that's a question of taste I guess

and xi fanbase is not as big as the other mmo's out there. the point is se is trying to reach out to the larger portion of the overall mmo base. that group is much bigger than what xi was able to bring in. i understand alot of people loved xi and that is exactly the kind of game they wanted, but se realized there was a much bigger overall demographic so went towards that group. sure it did not work on first try, but i have faith they will make the adjustments to get a larger base than xi had.

if those adjustments go the opposite direction of the way i want to see it go i will leave without causing drama because se is doing what's best for se. to make a long story short se cares about making money and getting the biggest base it can whether i or anyone else likes that direction we are only a small dot on a large graph.

Would love to play some FFXI I played that game for litteraly over 24,000 hrs (about 1000 RL days of game time since the NA release), you can say i was extremely hardcore waking up at 3-5am to kill things, never missing an event if didn't have class or work. I loved that game, unfortunately that game is gone.

But if you have not noticed SE has dealt a death blow to that game with Abysea, it destroyed over 90% of the games content and SE continues to nerf it more and more and as they do more and more people I knew who where sticking with it are quiting. SE removed all the challenge, all the feeling of accomplishment, all the pride of building a strong linkshell, the drive to get better gear and to improve your linkshell to take down hard mobs. Everything that was FFXI is gone it is now as shallow as WoW is. And the population of that game is reflecting it, 2 mergers in 1 year that game is bleeding subs about as fast as FFXIV is atm Fenrir at prime went from 1800 a night to about 600-800 a night as of last Sept. in a year that is about a 60% drop of a servers population.

I would play FFXI only if they rolled back servers to last June and scrap the whole abysea idea and add a expansion that does not massacre everything the game stood for.

FFXI will die no matter if FFXIV lives or not there is literally nothing to do in that game after a short time... you can beat the game and get the best gear in about 2 months now, If FFXIV lives at least we have 1 mmo, if it falls all we have is World of Warcraft left... or the Rift expansion made by another company.
