the only way to save the game (aka my wish never to come true)

In my opinion the only way to save the game is to completely redesign it. BUT you don't need to look so far for ideas how to rebuilt it. All you would need to do is ditch all the oh so new and great ideas and completely copy FFXI's current gameplay. ADMIT IT YOU WANT IT! Since most of the casual gamers who were the target group for this "new" and "innovative" type of gameplay (mess) we are dealing with now already left for most parts anyway. (and most likely will never return) So just give the FF fans what they want with better graphics. Just take the whole battlesystem etc. and put it into a new world.
You wouldn't even have to make up something new there. Just make the game part of the Ivalice Alliance or something alike and you would have a complete, highly expandable world setting with a working system which everyone who is willing to pay would love. (Just think of the racial options and so on but I am drifting off imagining a really wonderful game.. AND SO DO YOU ADMIT IT.)
Since FFXI always was a steady goldmine why not get everyone back and keep the money flowing instead of trying to appeal to and turn over all the WoW-loving morons.
Too bad I'm asking for the impossible: shut down the servers, completely ditch the game (heck I would even say its okay and donate you the money I paid for my copy if SE could pull off a game like I described) and make the game every ff fan would love.(which would take years again..)
Ah well.. the things that could have been..
I am prepared for the incoming s-storm of "troll go back blah blah" from ppl who want to justify the money or time they spent on obvious ... well whatever you wanna call 14. But I don't really care anyway, just wanted to share my idea, maybe there are other ppl who would like to play a part of the series they used to be fans of. To everyone else still defending the current mess: enjoy your leve quests on copypasted terrain and grind without content

From all the FFXIV forums both this one and others it should be common knowledge that you cannot just leave a mmo when you do not like it, you have to make at least 300 post on at least 4 different forums about how bad it is once you are at the 300 mark you are legally able by western mmo law to quit the game.

    lol So true.

I don't really understand people's mentality... I played and quit both DCUO and Rifts recently, without making any dramatic hate posts about how bad the games were. I really hate the last generation of parents... they really sucked at teaching their kids anything useful.

    lawl.

I'm sure I'll indulge in playing 14 no matter which path they take it on. In part, because I am a huge fanboy of the series. Of course I will enjoy it less, should it go down the path of a watered down, kid friendly, sellout to a higher demographic game.

this has nothing to do with posting or not and I have quit already, yeah. It's just kinda sad seeing a series you always liked (after years of anticipation) go down the gutter when sticking to the basics could've saved so much.. but that's a question of taste I guess

I think you'll find that this doesn't just hold true for MMORPGs. In fact, it doesn't hold true for just video games, either. No, it holds true for all products and services. If you create a product or service that does not measure up to people's expectations, then you create detractors, or people who warn others to avoid that product or service.

I recently read a blog post that talked about exactly this. Here's an excerpt:

What happens when your expectations are not met? How do you feel when a product or service doesn’t live up to the marketing or sales hype? Are you likely to recommend a product that fell short of your expectations?

So much of the “word of mouth” recommendation cycle is based on products or services meeting or exceeding personal expectations. Meet my expectations or just give me what I want, and I may or may not recommend your product. I have become a Passive, in Net Promoter® terms.

However, if you exceed my expectations, give me something that I didn’t expect and make me feel that you value me as a customer, then I will sing your praises to all my friends and family. You’ve made me a Promoter.

Fail to live up to my expectations and I will quickly become a Detractor. I will feel disappointed, cheated and even angry if your product or service doesn’t meet my standards. I won’t be buying a second time and I certainly won’t give you a recommendation. In fact, I may even warn my friends to stay away from whatever it is you have to offer.

LOL +1! Great, now I have to hang out around the Aion forums spewing bile until I hit 300 posts :P. Unfortunately for some people, even after 300 posts they still don't leave.
