Did you miss the part with the whole magic core thing? Like, the Talos glows, the gate glows, etc. It's not "lol some pressure switch" it's a magic barrier.
If someone wins an argument, they have learned nothing.
FOR DOCKHAND!
I believe the point is that everyone is acting like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. But as the OP stated, it's really not. The ending is pretty great. And there are some good moments scattered about. But as a whole, the filler really brings the overall story down quite a bit.
At moments it honestly feels like you're playing the 2.1 - 2.3 MSQ, which is pretty much the low point of the entirety of the game's story.
I like the story as well, but I truly believe people really are overrating it as a whole. People were talking like it's some 10/10 masterpiece.
I was worried that the pixies were going to be like the moogles, and that whole zone kinda dragged on pretty long for me. Although I wasn't overleveled and still did a lot of the sidequests so that's really my fault.
The only time I just wanted the story to be over was the first half of the last zone. You have to do a scavenger hunt for a scribble drawing of a building that doesn't even look anything like it. I ended up just googling where to go for that and it made me want to start skipping things to get it over with, which is a shame because the second half of that zone was great but I had a hard time getting back into caring about things.
But I liked every moment of the Rak'Tika Greatwood. I don't know how anyone could have a bad time with that music playing. Best song of the expansion.
These kinds threads separate the Final Fantasy fans from the MMO fans, Final Fantasy fans loved it while MMO peeps hated it.
For me it had a very strong start, the slow down parts are expected in any story. The more interested you are in learning backgrounds and how things work, then the story won't seem so bad when it slows down. For me, Rak'tika was where I got bored at but the whole Indiana Jones part made up for it. Amh Araeng, well I just knew that would be boring from the start so nothing to say there. It was like going through Heavensward story again with there being something during the slowdown bit that made up for it, which is why I can't say this blew Heavensward out of the park for me but it was up there and held my interest. I still had fun and enjoyed it a lot.
Someone not enjoying the story also does not equate to it being bad, it just might not be their cup of tea. It's pretty obvious by now that the people throwing around the word filler have no idea what it means.I believe the point is that everyone is acting like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. But as the OP stated, it's really not. The ending is pretty great. And there are some good moments scattered about. But as a whole, the filler really brings the overall story down quite a bit.
There is no filler at any point in the story. As someone brought out earlier people think its filler whenever there are parts of the story that aren't directly pushing it forward. Everything exists to feed the narrative of the hopeless situation everyone is in on the first, how they deal with it and eventually choices they make to overcome it.
Real filler are a side stories and characters that have no actual importance or relevance to the story and its entire purpose is to arbitrarily extend a story to make it longer than it needs to be.
If the story isn't your thing that's fine, but claiming that it's not as good as people are hyping it up to be because a small minority doesnt enjoy it is pretty ridiculous
Just goes to show that you can't please everyone no matter how "good" a story may be.
Sorry you feel that way
I absolutely loved the story. The only parts I didn't really like as much were some of the Western Ahm Araeng quests (especially the NPC fight that dragged on for about eight years longer than it needed to... but StB was guilty of that too :P). Just got a lil slower and I wasn't a big fan of how a couple of the characters acted.
The rest, though? Man, haven't wanted to rush to the next part of the story that much in a while. It's impossible to please everyone, but I think they did a darn good job.
I enjoyed the story a lot even if I was disappointed with certain parts and how they shied away from the darker tone they teased with the early Alisaie quest, though I have to admit that I didn't feel very involved in the Western Ahm Araeng section either. It felt very dragged out for a relatively simple goal and while I understand the "errand boy" element that is necessary to make this an actual MMO, that part in particular felt especially monotonous and random for all the time that it took to progress.
I also disliked the whole Magnus thing. We're given his sob story right off the bat and we get a reaction shot of all the NPCs and ourselves and it was kind of like the game was expecting us to feel sorry for this guy we met five seconds ago just because he lost his wife and kid. Like, sweety, we've been through and heard about a lot worse when we were still greenhorns, you can't just buy my sympathy so easily. But then the Talos comes to life and you think he is about to walk up and suddenly feel inspired, but instead he drunkenly curses the Talos and his entire world and I actually really liked that and loved how they didn't make him suddenly cured of his depression and excited... and then it leads to the Ryne complication and suddenly the whole arc felt like it somehow had a point.
....but then in the time it takes for the cutscene to fade to black and for you to run up to the next quest marker that is all suddenly disregarded and he's actually feeling better and motivated to help you.
Just.... well, okay I guess. You just spoiled the character in my opinion but I can let it slide, he wasn't super important anyways! (And then the whole Ryne and Halric let-downs follow not long after... so, uff. Fair to say that it was my least favourite part too, though I really enjoyed the duty).
