It's just admiration. Plan and simple.

We're his hero, if you remember the part where we had the beautiful one on one talk. He explained how the tales of a certain someone filled the hearts of every child and man at camp fires to give them hope.

It's fine if you wanna pretend it's some kind of romance undertone but it's not.

And about saving our lives, any of the scions would have done that if they could.
Actually I'm pretty sure the "WoL filling everyone's hearts with hope" thing was when he was explaining the truth to Urianger. The large-scale reason for the whole mission and why so many people were involved in making it happen.

Our one-on-one talk involved more "it would make me so happy to go on an adventure together and ride the eternal winds with you", which honestly is easier to spin as a romantic proposal than hero-worship, at least when directed towards my character. (Not because I was looking/hoping for it but because it seems unmissable to me - though of course it could still be platonic friendship.)

But again that interpretation also depends on the character he's talking to, and how you think your character related to him - both previously in CT and now.

Is the WoL really just walking up to him and he's all "Oh, you're back already? Is anything amiss?" and the WoL just stands there, thinks about it a sec, and goes "G'raha Tia." and... nothing else? lol

Not that his body language when you do it isn't more than enough of a response to make it worth it, of course. lol
Haha, yes it's definitely a bit odd!

Maybe you were about to tell him something, got as far as saying his name and then his reaction derailed your train of thought?

Two examples: The two guys for the dungeon-quest "Palace of the wanderer (hard)" (if that's the english name, don't know). They are a hyur and a miqo'te, both male and obviously a couple in love. And they tell you that they have problems at their home because they're a couple. But not because of the fact they're both male, but because of the fact that they're hyur and miqo'te.
I'm a bit unsure about that one actually. People use it as an example a lot, but actually I think it's more ambiguous. (Script is here)

In two separate parts of their dialogue they:
    1. point out that being different races doesn't make them any less of a couple, and
    2. say they both had to leave their birthplace because they were "different"

People have put those together and assumed that therefore being an interracial couple is the issue in their case, but it's not actually said. You could equally be meant to read between the lines and gather that actually it was another kind of "different" that was seen as the problem. Unless it's more clear in Japanese.
