West Ahm Araeng is certainly the dullest in terms of setting and goals, but there's still plenty of character growth there, and some interesting NPCs, and that's what you're missing out on if you skip the dialogue.
Skipping the dialogue doesn't stop you being in a boring desert and fixing the trolley.

Tbf, I still don't get why the trolley was made a huge deal of. We used it for all of, what, 30 meters, at roughly walking speed, and then just walked from there?

Feels more like we needed a magic rock to depress a floor-switch than an actual trolley.

I'm sure it was about the potion, indeed.
But people do defend all story in FFXIV very firmly.
And since it has been a heated topic lately. Maybe anything regarding people skipping story, especially new story which doesn't have any reason to be skipped due to being old or something, could have some reactions.

    Back on topic:

Since OP mentioned the first hours were amazing, I'm sure that once OP gets past all the "fillers" the story will get better again.
But yeah, there's probably been alot of small hints and bits that connects the story whole gone missing due to all the skipping.
    But to each their own.
Some people just aren't as deeply engrosed into story as other might be.

I have to post here since my daily limit is up.

I'm pretty sure OP found the story getting more and more boring before starting to skip it.
And I'm sure OP is reading small parts now and then atleast, to see if things do get better again.

I suppose we should all just agree with the OP to make her/him happy. Personally I've enjoyed all the expansions but this one is by far the best in my opinion. Oh I suppose if we disagree we'll be eating the OP alive.
And the story is good. Better than any expansion sofar imo.
Really excited to see what the continuation about the Ascians will bring us.
This is something I've been waiting for ever since I started FFXIV back in early 2.x somewhere.

I enjoyed the Greatwoods most, especially the latter parts of solving riddles and doing the little stealth section inside of the Pyramid. It was so refreshing to see this departure of the usual slay mobs and nod your head.

I did feel that western Amh Araeng, Rak'tika, and the last areas first part was a bit drawn out and / or fillery, but overall I'd say it wasn't as bad as the OP makes it out to be.

For me it had to do with the local population being... rather boring compared to the others, but we've had enough character interractions / drama / development that it made it passable. And they usually led to some good highs in the story.

The quest chain following the aether current quest out there was one of my favorites. The young mystel proving himself, the re-twinning of Twin, and ultimate reunification of the children of Nhaam Araeng if you did both of them. It felt like we were making a difference and bringing the world back together.

I personally find ShB the bast expansion for myself at the moment.

But well, we can't please everyone with the story, so, I suppose, it's just not what you like in general. Happens.

So if you skipped through the Greatwood, you would have skipped: all of the Ascian's history, explanation of the origin of the world, the Ascian's motivations, an example and explanation of what happens to souls after death, some foreshadowing involving the holy water and prayer beads, and some insight into Eulmore's military structure and people. All of this is rather important.

And yeah, the Talos was a bit odd, but really it's probably one of the easier methods of getting down there. Did you skip through the entire quest involving you figuring which way was the best? There's a huge reinforced magical gate in the way, and you're on a time limit.
-You might say, "oh but I could just get some explosives and blow open that gate!" Sure, and risk collapsing the bridge and/or tunnel in the process. Not to mention you didn't exactly bring a bunch of bombs with you, and going back to the Crystarium to try and get some made would take too long.
-Climb the mountains and go around? You know, I think picking a fight with some bugs in a cave actually seems much easier and more in line with a fighter's strengths than spending weeks gathering the supplies and undergoing the training needed to go *mountain climbing.*
-Fly over? Did you miss Eulmore having a fleet of airships and tons of flying Sin Eaters? You know you and the scions can't do mounted fighting for squat, so going up there would just lead to certain death. Plus you're trying to be sneaky.
-Go around from the east? Not only do they explain that Alisaie isn't keen on dragging the hospital full of dying people and volunteer caregivers into your conflict (you may have skipped that), but there's also a giant gorge in the way.
-Further west? Mountains. Plus it'd take an eternity to get there, and there's no guarantee you'd be able to get back to your destination.
-The south? Radioactive (aetherically, anyhow) wasteland. If you hadn't noticed, you are indeed trying not to take in too much Light aether at the moment.

Also, did you miss the character development for Thancred and Minfilia, including the bits about how Thancred is trying to cope with the loss of the original Minfilia and how that parallels to the engineer's inability to cope with his family's deaths? Both men turned to unhealthy methods of coping, one to alcohol and the other controlling (another) surrogate daughter. There's also Minfilia feeling powerless to do anything and her coming to terms with what she wants out of life, after having a life full of expectations forced on her (first by Eulmore, then by Thancred.) Even Urianger gets some pretty hilarious lines from time to time there.

but nah yeah skip it lol reading is for nerds
