I just started a couple months ago and I have about 4 mil gil atm. Is it worth it to get a house? Could I port to one for free if I put a crystal there? Is it a bad idea if I may cancel my sub sometimes during content droughts?

Warning, check my signature for the house buying experience.
With 4m, you'll need one of the cheaper plots to cover the cost of estate construction. I think it's worth it, because I'm a housing addict. There is a small fee to teleport, about 160~gil without a reduction buff I think. You have 45 days to enter your house. Meaning if you cancel your sub, you have a 45 day window to get back in or else it's gone.
If you're wanting the freedom to cancel your sub during content droughts, you should consider getting an apartment instead. You won't have to worry about ever losing it, you can still decorate with indoor furniture, and you will have the reduced teleport fees directly to the apartment without having to place a crystal. Unless you really want to play with outdoor decorations or gardening, this may be your best option.
If I could give you a suggestion, try an apartment or a free company apartment first. They're 500k and 300k respectively and can give you the feeling of housing. Get you some furniture and fill the place the way you want and if you feel you want to move onto something bigger then go for it.

Here's what you can do with just an apartment, with the door in the back leading to 2 small rooms with beds and other decorations. If you feel like you need more space or would just like a yard to do gardening or other things then, again, go for it.
Thanks for the input. If I change guilds or it disbands do I lose what I've invested?
If you change fc, you will lose the room but you can keep your furniture, try an apartment its not subject to auto demolition or sudden displacement in an unfortunate event that your fc disbands.
It's up to you. I have no idea if you enjoy creativity or interior design. If it doesn't appeal to you, then you don't need to bother committing to a house.
There really aren't content droughts in FFXIV. Regardless, IF you can get a house at all, it's pretty worth it for the fun of it, especially for social purposes.
It has very little practical application though.
