What my +20 attack single slotted axe didn't make me demolish Ifrit in one hit?

I think what they're trying to get to is Materia doesn't seem to make a big impact. Guy made another thread (Found here) saying +35 MND +12 Healing Potency didn't make a huge difference on his heals.
