One thing to keep in mind is that both the Japan and English team work on the lore and script together so neither technically has precedence over the other. That said my understanding is that the French and German versions slide more towards the Japanese version as well as the English version usually being the one getting the short end of the stick if certain things become more important later, or in less important areas things like naming conventions that work in Japanese but not in English.

The link here goes into a situation of the later one: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...on-and-Acheron

From what I’ve seen. Haurchefant seems to have a crush on you in the Japanese version. But he seems to see you as a close friend in the English version.

Urianger talks in the most EXTREMELY polite way possible in Japanese. In case you didn't know, there's a very complex "politeness" subset of language in Japanese. So uses keigo, sonkeigo, and some outdated, even archaic Japanese words. That's why they have him using very old style English in the translation.

As someone who is fluent in Japanese, I tend to have Japanese voices and English client. So I notice the differences all the time. For the most part though, I never go "why did they translate it that way?" because they're pretty good with matching the intended meaning even without being literal.
