Male Viera as a playable character! show your support

From SE's POV, maybe, but we also knew nothing about them until they were actually released, whilst Viera have been requested for years upon years now and almost got a release in HW. Whilst a beast race had also been requested amongst some quarters, SE had never given any indication that they would deliver on it - quite the opposite - nor had they given any indication as to the form.

Then came the build-up for ShB, and but for the leaks (which are a hornet's nest of controversy unto themselves), no one had any concrete reason to expect another race to be coming, whereas Viera were all but confirmed. Thus, which replaced which in SE's eyes is very different from how it is viewed in the playerbase's eyes.

Too bad, because they are unreasonable, they won't apologize, and they're not here anymore. And if some are still here, go take that up with them one on one instead of dragging in other people who had nothing to do with it.


Ok, then let's not scapegoat the supporters who didn't do any of that. The ones that did probably moved onto twitter or something.

What you fail to realize is that this is the view of people OUTSIDE of this thread. Most people make fun of this thread and act malicious about it because of the first impression of male viera supporters. If you want to blatantly ignore that and say "I don't get why people are mean to us." Then that's on you.

This thread also very much still has some very toxic supporters in it. One's that attack you and shoot you down for merely having a different opinion. And once you call them out, they play the victim role and say that you're attacking them. There are still many from the beginning that shouted their hate of Hrothgar. Whether you like it or not, these bad eggs made a bad first impression for the entirety.

Technically, the Viera were the replacement of female Hrothgar, if past interviews imply anything.

Yet there is an interview from mrhappy where it seems Viera were decided 1st but to give more choice they decided to add Hrothgar as well

We wanted to give players options and freedom to choose more races. We envisioned adding a new race, but people really wanted the Viera to play in-game. So if we add another new race that isn’t Viera, people might wonder why we didn’t do Viera, so we had to add them for sure.

We had a big discussion back when we added Au ra in Heavensward about whether to add Au ra or Viera. We knew we only had Female Viera for reference, so we had no idea what to do for the Male variant. We would have to use our own imagination for that. There was fear about how we would approach that. Perhaps an elezen body with a miqo’te face and bunny ears. Would this be the right way to add this race to the game?

When we create a fantasy game, especially for FF14. We have a good variety of races. We don’t really need any more cute or sweet looking characters because we have so many as it is.

Especially for FF14, we have many symbols of power or strength such as Highlander and Roegadyns. We wanted something more animal like. Its not that we wanted to create a wild west of characters, but we do need a good variety. So the simple answer is: Viera was sought after so we had to add those. To expand the game and its options, we also wanted to add Hrothgar.

So at this stage i just leave it at they were both being considered around 3.1, Viera they felt obligated to add, Hrothgar they wanted to add, one half of both was picked as a way to try and compromise, it backfired more than they expected, they are now waiting to see if they can consider adding the missing genders at a later point.

Yes, and that's precisely the issue in terms of perception. They were meeting two sets of demand there - one from the playerbase and one which they thought would expand choice in the game (and no doubt build on profits if the risk paid off.)

Yeah well, Hroth may look cool, but I still think they were a poor replacement for male Viera. But you know what, those wanting a beast like race got what they wanted. So there is no reason for people to be putting this thread under ridiculous standards and trying to deny us requesting male Viera. There is literally nothing wrong with us asking for the missing genders of both the new races.

I get tired of the holier than thou approach that some supporters here take. Like they were in the wrong but still act like they're the defenders of justice for Viera.

Hrothgar add something genuinely new, at least. They're an excellent addition to the game.

Here's the issue:

1) You have Yoshi-P stating that in terms of resources, adding two separate genders per race is equivalent to adding one full race.

2) They have stated they would consider adding the missing genders, but that resource costs currently prevent it. This is only some time after they were moved to respond to the topic, following fan outcry about their decision not to add male Viera and female Hrothgar.

2) is conditional in nature, and means unless that happens, they are in fact acting as a replacement for the gender not added. I don't see how that conclusion can be avoided, when they themselves have framed it this way.

Now it is true that those requesting mViera can be respectful in how they approach the topic, but I'm not sure why SE's decision here should not be seen for what it is.

It's not something that needs to be focused on. All it does is sow strife and turn away potential supporters. The missing genders might be added to the game at some point in the future. Equally so, they might not.

I would full out not respond to Arngrim, I could care less for what he thinks of this thread. I don't like Hrothgar and feel they were a huge mistake and added at the wrong time, so what? I have nothing to apologize for. Just like you don't have to apologize for not wanting Male Viera.
