Can anyone explain what “The First” even is? Or it’s significance?

it's not a big deal. You don't enjoy the MSQ and that's fine but don't expect everyone to be kind and hold your hand and explain everything when you're lost because you have made the decision to not even try to have a rough idea what the story is about.

You're entitled to skp the MSQ. I'm entitled to not want to spell everything out to you hence why I was actually surprised at how kind everyone is.

my biggest nitpick is just you saying people are freaking out. They are excited for sure but i haven't really noticed anyone freaking out. I mean... the Beatles are a thing of the past.

Nope gotta go through New Game + to understand the story. Because quite frankly? It is insulting to the writers that you skip all the cutscenes.

Back a LONG time ago, Hydaelyn (the mothercrystal) and Zodiark coexisted. But Zodiark got too big for his britches and Hydaelyn smacked him down (sealing him in the moon). But in doing so, she "shattered" into 13 pieces. These pieces became alternate dimension versions of our world (the Source). Those alternate dimension versions of Hydaelyn also served as a "barrier" to keep Zodiark sealed away.

However, on the 13th shard, a flood of darkness came (caused by an overly aggressive Ascian) and engulfed the world, turning it into "the Void", a world devoid of aether and all it's inhabitants becoming twisted monsters.

The First is another one of the shards (their all named for a number 1-13). That is where we are going for Shadowbringers, because it was hit with a flood of light, which is just as bad as the flood of darkness. Luckily, the flood was halted and we have a chance to fix it.

The overall story, however, is that the Ascians (masked evil guys) are causing the Calamities (major destruction) on the Source (our world) because every time they do, Hydaelyn absorbs one of the shards to heal herself. They have done so 7 times so far (we have had 7 Calamities). If they can cause 1 more Calamity, that will be enough to weaken the barrier and allow Zodiark to free himself.

Hm, I had a feeling it was something like that. Because how would certain characters in the trailer of ShB change so drastically if it wasn't a kind of alternate dimension thing?

I can totally understand why someone wouldn't enjoy the story. Especially at first as it seems more chaotic than anything. However, OP, when the New game + is available I'd suggest giving it a shot. It starts to get more and more enjoyable and the recent stuff is amazing (IMO of course).

Edit: Chaotic is not the right term. More disorganized.

There are numerous ways to obtain tl;dr’s of the plot. Also the majority of key cutscenes are available at the local inn. Just seems odd that you’d care that other folks are hyped for the story and have to know why when the plain answer is they enjoy and pay attention to the story which isn’t some strange concept to grasp.
