...Which is pretty much what I did. With these promotions before I would usually just buy a $20 Nintendo Eshop card and call it a day. Wasn't the case this time, however.

They might be trying to get a preorder game. Those do not qualify sadly, I think some people abused it in the past. Because preoder games use to qualify.

It did get abused. People would preorder, wait until they got their item code(s), then cancel the preorder. This is why we can't have nice things. xD

Yes seems the reddit post was edited and it is the same. Personally I'll pass I have the regular fat chocobo and it's account wide. Thank you for the clarification.

It also appears they have pretty much stopped people from ordering and canceling by delaying giving you the for a couple days. That was the method I was going to use. Now to get this mount, I need to want whatever I purchase.
