    It's Jannequinard.

(This is a joke; I like Belhi's idea that Y'shtola likely just co-opted Matoya's name for her sojourn on the First. After all, the Warriors of Darkness took aliases while on the Source, why wouldn't the Scions?)

I kinda hope that if Urianger is inhabited by someone else, it's not Louisouix. Louisouix got a perfectly decent send-off at the end of Coil, and it'd be kind lame to bring him back now. That said, it IS a perfectly workable theory...

You can bet your bottom dollar that if Matoya is wearing Y'shtola like a skin suit it's BECAUSE she genuinely cares about her apprentice. She would do so only if it was absolutely necessary, and for Y'shtola's direct benefit. For example, if for some reason Y'shtola's return to her body was delayed, and the body was in danger of dying with no soul to inhabit it - I could easily see Matoya stepping forward to use her own soul to preserve the body until it was ready for Y'shtola's return, and happily vacate it once that event occurred. She would likely not think twice about ending her own life to allow Y'shtola a chance to live on. That's just one possible reason, off the top of my head, and there could be others that don't transform Matoya into a monster.

He'd look pretty ridiculous in it, I think!

...not that Urianger looks all that great in it either. Maybe personal taste, but it's prettymuch the opposite of what I think works for Elezen costume design. Still, even though they logically have the same physical design, I feel like it would look stranger on Jannequinard... it's a personality thing, I guess. At least Urianger seems to have the elegance to pull it off, even if it's not his usual taste in clothing.

(I did try to reply to this last night just after you'd posted it, but I'd hit my post limit for the day. Would be nice if they could raise the limit on patch day at least... or maybe let you save up extra post allowances over time.)

I think that would be weird, actually. They wrapped it up really nicely in the Binding Coil, and he said his farewells to them. I'm not sure they could add anything to that by having him return again, and especially if he's not visually himself.

Here's a situation that could maybe fit everything presented in the trailer:

The Scion's souls have gone to the First without their bodies. Matoya and the remaining Sharlayans realize there is still trouble coming on the Source they need to defend against. Through similar soul transfer magic that has been teased, they enact a plan to temporarily inhabit the Scion's bodies for both their symbolism and power. Matoya to Y'shtola, Leveva to Urianger, Rammbroes to someone else, etc. This sets up the scene from the trailer to make sense, a Sharlayan disciple and Astrologian, Leveva, talks to a former Master Matoya who is also a Witch/Black Mage type. They intend to "hold the line until our friend (The Warrior of Light) returns."

That's a neat theory. I rather like Leveva as a character, and it would be cool to see a job-specific character brought into the quest line like that.

That scene from the trailer was taking place in Rak’tika Greatwood though, so it takes place on the First.

Yeah that is the problem, isn't it? Y'shtola's body is on the Source. Her soul is on the first. And we have somebody looking and sounding like Y'shtola on the first, who calls herself Matoya.

I doubt it is an alias. I mean the trust system still uses the real names for Minfilia, Urianger, Dantencred and the Twins.

Going with what we now know, my best guess is that the process used to drag the Scions' souls over to the First may have damaged their memories, and in the interim between her departure and our arrival she began calling herself "Matoya" because she forgot her own name but remembered Matoya's.

    Just a guess... eh...

Y'shtola suffering some kind of affliction from her use of forbidden magicks has been heavily foreshadowed. I expect the transfer to the First will affect her in a major way, probably her memory.
So I wouldn't be at all surprised by Cilia's scenario for Y'shtola alone. The whole group? That would seem unlikely.
It might explain why she's with Uriangier (he's acting as carer in some capacity) and why she's not present in Dohm Mheg (still recovering from the transition, maybe unconscious and we don't yet know she's lost her memories)

Here's a fly in the ointment:

Q: I see, so they understand situational changes.

Yoshida: For example, Y'shtola is a special version of BLM called the "Witch" job ((name may be different in EN)). When she's targeted with an AoE while casting, she'll of course cancel the cast to move out of the AoE. If she happens to get targeted by two in a row, then in order to make up for that loss, she'll use Triplecast to do burst damage. After losing a certain amount of DPS from having her actions interrupted, she recovers it that way. Each character has their own detailed settings like that, which is why having commands would actually make things stranger. Even when you're playing with real people, you'll run into issues like people not focusing on the same mob. Instead of telling them to switch every time, it's probably more effective to adjust to them. Please think of Trusts the same way. Trusts will adjust to the player, unless they determine that continuing to attack their current target is the better choice.
