Also, I didn't mention this earlier cause there was no reason to. I do make a profit. I have 10 mil spread across 4 of my characters. It's just the sight of the market that made me bring this up.

Gil has been in a strange place for many people having too much of it since the ARR days as is, part of housing was to help by being a gil sink and that isn't enough even if it was done in a way that every player could purchase it so long as they have the gil. EX the amount of players with multiple ones and still having spare gil exceeding half the player base.
hmm. i didn't know that. thanks for clarifying

Server hopping in Limsa is pretty easy and is certainly worth it for relatively high market priced items. There can be quite a disparity between servers when it comes to pricing. I personally do it all the time now.

Relative to markets and selling it's certainly frustrating during slow periods to see the pricing and watch markets crash as a result of certain sellers. And yeah seeing hq priced at less that nq is always a bundle of laughs. Be sure to penta meld all that gear and then sell it for less than those who gather and didn't bother to worry about gathering hq. There really isn't much you can do it's part of the marketplace and bots when it comes to gathering have only made many of the more in demand items almost not worth gathering.

I've made most of my money gathering and have been off the market since around 4.2. Selling is work and requires time and attention to pricing. I don't really need the money anymore but with xpac if you want to make gil spend the first few weeks focused on selling because there will be big money while most of your competition is worried about main story and leveling jobs.

Oh straight up I'm gonna be on that market early. Also, how I make most of my money are from the people too lazy to go and gather for the quest. Like right now on my server HQ Wyvern Obsidian was selling for 3-5 k a piece. I made an easy couple hundred K with the new WoW refugees coming in right now.

I'll look at the history of an item. If there's an easy to craft item with two up on market for 150k and last time it sold was 2 weeks ago for 60k, you can get I'm going to quickly craft that item and put it up for 60k.

I also reduce the price of all my items on mb by about 10% per day.

Don't feel bad about it at all. If an items getting undercut that's because it's not selling fast enough most of the time.

Also crafters sometimes go for that craft everything achievement over the course of a few weeks and have a ton of product to move. Crazy to think anyone is just going to sit on that or vendor it.

So there might be some people clueless about the market, don't care as long as they make a small profit quickly(low profit margins but high volume of sales),as long their item sells, bots, etc.

However, do consider that some people deliberately crash market segments for long-term profits. It's a player driven free market after all.

Some sellers have deep pockets and they're willing to sell items at a loss, if it forces some of the competition out of that market segment. Once some of the competetion has been 'eliminated', they can dominate that market segment and raise prices.

Fortunately, world visit has broken up a lot of such monopolies but it still does happen.

Another example; when I want cheap X crafting mats, I'd do something like throw up my own stock of X crafting mats onto the market board, at a price which is still profitable for me but enough for the undercutters to begin a downwards spiral of undercutting.

When the mats reach a low enough price according to me, I buy them all out.

    Undercutting is predictable.

A successful merchant will manipulate the undercutters to her advantage.

keep in mind that HQ gear is given out like candy from quest rewards. So those pieces will always sell dirt cheap, because to the person getting them as rewards--they invested ZERO gil in obtaining them. They can sell them for like 1,000 gil and feel like they still walked away with a profitable sale. You'll never compete with that. And that's a problem with Square-Enix's quest reward system. Just avoid those items.

And this is smart. However, I would find it hard to believe that there is 1 person controlling thousands of markets at a time. Like the gathering market.

There are FCs/LS(s) which coordinate market segment takeovers and monopolies.

I think many of the gathering market segments are plagued by gathering bots/bot farms.

Even if they sell stuff at 1 gil each, it's profit for them. And since, it's not profitable for human players to compete directly with bots/bot farms, there are plenty of market segments which are basically bot monopolies competing with each other.
