I don't think purposely wearing the wrong gear should be considered a "playing it your own way."

Besides, it's not like they get kicked for just being ignorant. It's usually their toxic responses that lead to the rest of the party agreeing with it. For example, it could go something like this.

"Hey black mage, why are you wearing strength acessories?"

    "They increase my hit chance."

"You know that's not true, right?"

    -other party member comments-

"I don't care what you say, you're just lying!"

"Nah man, STR really doesn't do anything for your class."

"OMG, why won't you shut up already?"

    -Initiates kick- -kick passes-
    -Gets a new dps-

That's normally the short of it.

(Other people generally chime in. Some positive. Some negative. But 99% of the time, the rest of the party is entirely supportive of my approach, and the kick. So I don't think it's considered abuse).

My friends and I have come to refer to this phenomenon as "Warrior Of Light Syndrome". There is a really bizarre culture of arrogance in this game that newer players seem to develop. People come out of the MSQ acting like they are the absolute master of the game, and will often get into aggressive confrontations when someone points out that they're wrong about something.

Maybe it has something to do with how the MSQ is structured and how your character is portrayed? idk.

I never had a problem doing any of the roles in that dungeon with augmented shire gear pulling from boss to boss with said gear. What's the issue with that dungeon specifically?

    Edit: I'm dumb

But it's not about shire, it's about ironworks...so lvl 50 gear...

One thing WoW did a few years back to eliminate this confusion was to remove do-nothing stats from character sheets.
For example, STR just doesn't show up any more for my Shaman, but if I played a warrior, it would be there.
