Trust System / Solo Gaming

Such a great game ... And it really needed trusts. I mean, there's just not enough active population anymore. If anyone ever wanted to just play it like an offline entry for the (great) story, find a small bit of cash and do it. So worthwhile.

I took advantage of the game's returning week or two was it? I had played it long ago, but due to issues and failures I could never keep a character higher than 30. I had heard of the trusts and tentatively hoped they would help leveling. Then I was pleasantly surprised that I could actually beat the major story points. It took me over ten years or so, but I finally finished the original story. XD After all, there was barely anyone on the server I was on, so I knew right off the bat that without trusts I would be in trouble.

I do hope FFXIV's does well enough, there will come a time when population drops are going cause issues in low tier progression.

Yeah, it's inevitable... maybe not as severe as XI although given enough time any game would reach that point.
Also, the fact is that if FFXI went offline tomorrow, SE could port it into an offline game and sell it for $20 without a massive amount of effort.
In terms of Legacy, it's an important move, else you have an FF title that ceases to exist, and SE doesn't want that.

Also, with FFXI, yeah, mainly everyone has congregated to Ashura server (which feels old timey in its population density) for English speakers, and one other server for Japanese speaking players.
There's a couple other mid population servers, and everything else is basically tumbleweeds.
From what I understand though the game is cheap enough to operate that they still make a profit, so it won't be closing down any time soon.
