A lot of people are glad of an autism diagnosis, and probably have it because they sought it out for official confirmation.

The increasing amount of diagnoses is to do with awareness of it in the first place, and perhaps increased willingness to talk about it.

Knowing we have a condition and how it affects us is important. It helps us to understand how our brains work, and what we need to look out for.

The terminology has shifted too. I have Asperger's, which used to be set apart as the "high-functioning" end of the autism spectrum, but now has officially been merged in and it's all just "autism" regardless of the degree. I'm not sure I like that, and prefer to stick to the original term.

Yeah when I was recently diagnosed she used the term Aspergers even though the paperwork said autism spectrum disorder

I think even the psychologists aren't happy about the term change. I had to get re-diagnosed as an adult fairly recently (originally having a childhood diagnosis) and the official document said something like "has autism in the form previously known as Asperger's" which was a neat way of working in both the correct term and the more descriptive one.

I think what many people misunderstand is "ASD" is a very broad term it's not just one thing.. It's kind of like "cancer". it's a term that covers a whole range of conditions. lymphoma, leukemia, sarcoma, etc..

I have Aspergers Syndrome. So I have difficulties with social interactions and a few anxiety issues which can be problematic at times. but it's generally more of a problem around people I don't know than those I do.

In my case though it does have advantages. people with aspergers often have amazingly high levels of audio/visual perception and recognition and over the years it has often been joked among my friends as a kind of god mode in games. because I clearly see patterns and trends that other people can be oblivious too. which generally means PVP games or something like the scripted encounter design of xiv's fights is significantly easier for me to learn than for most. because they are essentially all just scripted patterns of events.. the flip side of that though is my lack of social skills does sometimes mean i can be rather abrupt and impatient to people that cant pickup those patterns so easily. so my participation in things like savage is usually limited to occasional slot filler when someones static is a man down for the week.

It also means that i generally look at tings in a much broader way than other people tend to partly because im looking for a pattern in everything basically and this can prove to be both advantageous at work and a disadvantage, because where people may look at a problem from a fairly narrow perspective i tend to look at a much wider perspective and see very different picture and identify the root cause of said problems much faster. however it also means that I occassionally overthink things and generally end up trying to do too much at once or in the case of people focussing on what they may consider insignificant details. like my friend falling out with her best friend and i'm asking what colour she dyed her hair....??? (even when i know it has no relevance i'm still looking for a pattern. like you always fall out when her hair is red.... or something dumb))

I had a bad fall in 2018 my new kitten ran behind me I fell top to bottom of the stairs at home...resulted in a Comminuted Bimalleolar fracture of my ankle the force cause me to crush tib and fib and dislocation.
I had manipulation at the hospital with surgery to try again and then a surgery called Open reduction internal fixation. Was and still is a horrific recovery, the plate on one side is secure with screws but the malleolus (inside ankle) has not healed and one of the big screws holding it together have snapped lol.

Anyhow I have developed Complex pain syndrome on top of my Nephrotic Syndrome. I get very tired I can't sit too long or walk far and I need to move around and because of the pain I do lose my concentration a lot when playing but I try and enjoy the days I can play. I am also grateful I didn't fall forward or I would not be here playing and looking forward to the new Expansion. I am due further surgeries in the future.

Willow my beautiful kitty is all grown up now and still doesn't realise the shit she has caused haha! Her nickname is Ankle Snapper

The big one for me is auditory processing disorder, which (among other things) makes trying to remember things being verbally explained to me like progression raid mechanics a near-impossibility. There's also carpal tunnel syndrome in my right hand, which isn't extreme yet, but can still be annoying.

I too have Asperger's Syndrome/ADD. It's becoming quite common it seems. Some in my family have it as well at least showing sings of it.

I have anxiety disorders and bilateral CTS (I have to wear splints all the time when I play). I'm usually on in evenings when I feel more at ease to play and can do well, as long my hands don't go numb >.< The game and my friends have been a huge support for me thus far and I'm looking forward to keep going this upcoming expansion.

I've got EDS (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome) which can make playing for long periods of time really challenging, especially since I'm awful at playing on a controller so I need a keyboard and mouse.

EDS causes your joints to be incredibly flexible... way too much. I can dislocate my jaw from just chewing too much and for me the worst part of playing XIV is sometimes just holding my wrists/hands up over my keyboard. I've got a gigantic padded wrist pillow thing that I rest them in between pulls and I make good use of auto-run.

Sitting in one position for too long can become painful so recently I've been experimenting with lap desks as well as looking into a really comfy gaming chair. We'll see what works out best.

Good luck everyone! Glad to see you're still trying!
