Protesting against single gendered races! Keeping the ideal alive! Fighting for inclusion not exclusion!
“Never be afraid to raise your voice for honesty and truth and compassion against injustice and lying and greed. If people all over the world...would do this, it would change the earth.”
― William Faulkner
I feel my biggest issue with the gender lock, is that it can come across as a little sexist. Now I am not saying SE is sexist or that their decision was sexist, just that it comes across that way. Basically, it's the age old trope of, big burly guy, and dainty lithe gal. Now SE can't be faulted for it being like that, since both races are based off previous ones found in the Final Fantasy series. But if the both races were implimented with a gender lock but in reverse with only male Viera and female Hrothgar, then this decision wouldn't really be sexist since it plays against stereotypes. Though, I know that would not be an option, since only female Viera have an active presence in the series. The other thing that could of helped a gender lock would of been if the races were comparable to one another in some way. That's part of the reason the whole Miqo'te/Roegadyn issue was a thing as well, since the races weren't comparable
Basically, if the two races are different but close enough in some way, the difference become more minimal. Take for example if female Viera were implimented alongside male Au ra. Both races are tall, lean, have tails, unique body adornments, fur, scales, and unique "ears". Besides those differences they are very alike, but different enough to be two different races. The same thing can be said about male Miqo'te and female Au ra; tails, ears, body, etc. The main point is you cant go to each extreme without offering the extremes to everyone. Otherwise, find the middle ground.
I like helping people with their Job ideas, it's fun to help them visuallize and create the job they'd like to play most. Plus I make my own too, I'll post them eventually.
Based on your expectations of what Male Viera and Female Hrothgar would look like.
Well Male Viera aside, since that was just concept art; though SE did say that's what they would look like. But we already know what female Hrothgar look like/will look like. But you are right it is based on expectations. But as long as it went against stereotypes I'd be for it... I think.
The one thing I do hope for, when the other genders are implimented, (I'm being optimistic, lol), is that male Viera are shorter than female Viera, since Male rabbits are smaller than females in real life. Something like a reverse Elezen sizing; female Viera mimic male Elezen and male Viera mimic female Elezen. I don't expect this with Hrothgar though since females are already established from FFX.
