Mentors are not perfect players who know every dungeon, fight or mechanic in and out. They are just long enough in the game and did enough content so they can teach Newcomers the basics and help them with their first steps. Show them around a little. Answer questions about where to get this, unlock that and so on. That's what it is all about.

There are several possible scenarios when involving mentors and non-mentors:
-The mentor knows something the others don't. They should listen.
-The others for some reason know something that the mentor doesn't, and the mentor is the one who should be listening.
-The mentor and the others both listen to each other.
Unfortunately, the first 2 scenarios (with the addition of listening not happening) seem to be just as common as the 3rd, if not more so.
Here we go again.
If think it would work better if we get a mentor system on a more personal level. Right now most Mentors are just players who wanted the crown and are not really interested in teaching new players anything. The novice chat is a joke and often more toxic than it should be. I know there are good mentors but most just don't care sometimes I can't blame them for it. If people can adopt one or two novice players on the server teach them and provide actual interactions it could work better especially if a mentor get's a reward for let's say the novice get's to level 50 with any class. Also take the crowns away and the people who want to help out will do so and the others at least don't stick out.
It's actually a pretty good idea. Maybe switch out the all 50 to one 70, as 50 can be bought out.If think it would work better if we get a mentor system on a more personal level. The crown is really not necessary. It just make people stick out. Beside the problem aren't the mentor but the people, some need to understand that. If the crown is hidden and the mentor could still help, it might work.
And this time the reward wouldn't be a problem as those that only want a reward just have to make an alt and let the people that want to mentor do their thing.
Problem isnt the mentors the problem is people expect them to be perfect. They expect them to know every mechanic from every piece of content from all role perspectives and have all jobs at 70 with indept knowledge of those jobs.
^ This over expectation is why mentors are seen as bad when they dont explain mechanics or offer every little detail.
One reason I stopped doing mentor roulette because now that the regalia is here the mount is not worth it. Running it as a tank is also no longer worth it. Also didnt know when you run mentor roulette even if you have the crown hidden, it displays your crown.
Sure. Because the crown is there as a signal to the sprouts "If I have a problem/question, this guy is here to help". Running mentor roulette without the crown would dodge that responsibility.
I have a mentor crown, and help people when I have knowledge of what they are asking about, but when I run dungeons and trials, I usually get complete silence from the group.
We wipe several times to them not knowing mechanics, and their job rotations, but they don't even ask for help.
I could tell them how to do the mechanics right, how to do their rotations right, but you often get push-back if you tell people how to play.
Which is why I tend to do the "give advice when asked" thing, but as I mentioned earlier, duties can often just be a complete silence of failure due to it.
Please guys, if you need help, just ask, I'll help as much as I am able to.
