I'm genuinely confused as to why there is a waist slot in the glam system anyway since it doesn't show at all. I'd love to see belly piercings and just more facial piercing in general, but I'm not really sure if that is a thing in Japan.

same reason one handed wands and offhands are still in the game. only pld can use a shield beyond level 50 but you still have the "option" to stick a shield on your thaumaturge because a legacy char might log in some day with it equipped.

As Lihtleita said, its a result of the concessions the devs needed to make for 1.x legacy characters that may decide to log into the game at any random time. As for the waist spot in particular; back in 1.x the belts and other waist items were actually distinct objects that would change model when you equipped a different item there, just like the rest of the gear. However for 2.0 onwards, they decided that having the waist options with their own appearances was a waste of resources or didn't match very well with the costumes they made, and so decided to fold in belt designs with the chest pieces.

1.0 used belt items and they reflected on your character. For ARR they kept the items, but removed the visual due to it being easier to model the graphics based on fewer slots.

To be fair, the 1.0 belts looked pretty trash.

There isn't a waist slot in the glamour system though. Glamour plates don't show it at all, the sub menu on the waist slot omits the glamour option, and in the Cast Glamour interface there is a category "waist/legs/feet" but it only shows legs and feet, not waists.
