I couldn't agree I don't see how a stats stacking system like materia covers what the merit/talent system did.

It doesn't really...after all the complaints about drop/quest/raid gear being "worthless with materia around" you'd want a system like XI Merits or JSE/AF from XI (that enhanced abilities or gave access to new ones/traits etc, something materia wouldn't do.)
For example Empyrean armor from XI would easily counter balance Materia in a heart beat.
What's a Merit?
I'm serious, you guys talk about Merit in FFXI and other MMOs like it's common knowledge, while my only experience in MMOs that lasted long was in Ragnarok Online and Aion and I've never hear about things like Merits, or if I had, it was masked in another word, so enlight me please =)

Oh lol well I didn't get to 75 (FFXI) myself personally but 2 people i knew irl did and basically after you level up to 75 (back when it was the cap) you can continue to gain levels that turned into merit points that could be put into random things like reduced cool downs on abilities and such stuff.
You know how in Ragnarok you gain ability points to upgrade a skill after a level? Something like that sort of. Someone might be in here in a moment to clarify it better then me lol >_>

1. Lets you increase your stats beyond the level cap since they weren't raising the level cap beyond 75 at that point, kind of like point allocation here in terms of stat "customizing".
2. Lets you increase your magic/physical skills, something lacking in this game but this basically pushed your enhancing/enfeebling/elemental/healing/etc magic another tier or two.
3. Unlocks new abilities or spells, e.g Dia/Bio III for RDM or Freeze/Tornado/etc II for BLMs.
4. Lets you enhance your weapon skill levels, which basically bumps them a letter grade (which means more accuracy/attack/unlocking weapon skills that aren't job specific etc.)
That's the main purpose of merits, in terms of FFXI's merit system. As of now they also allow you to unlock and enhance your weapon of choice final weapon skill.
I like the idea of enhancing my character through a meritting system.
I dislike the fact that in 11, anything added in merits will, after player testing, be deemed essential and must have or be worthless. People will just go the cookie cutter route. I would like to see more specialisms which really mean something and can validly stand as a way to go.
People like this make me chuckle. I hope they make XIV exactly like XI just for you. Hell they have in a lot of ways, why are you still here again?
On topic; I wouldn't mind seeing a Merit system when the "real" cap is it. But for now, just wouldn't fit. As long as it didn't deal with quest, which knowing SE it wont.

It's funny how the guy suggests a merit system, and the only thing you people can think of is "GRINDING MOBS".
You can go about it in a completely different way that doesn't involve grinding.
All I see is hurr.
