To be honest, other than the ears, I'd really prefer they give the males options for chest fur and/or facial hair, more options is always better and if we cannot agree on a body type, at least let those who wish to make their boys more 'masculine' to have the option to do so and vice versa for those who'd prefer their boys to be more on the feminine/androgynous side.

....I'm not sure if they should be asking for money for altering screenshots of the game. That person could get into some really serious legal and copyright infringement trouble by SE if they wanted to pursue it. The screenshots are CLEARLY copyrighted by SE down on the bottom and this person is getting paid money for the graphics and assets they didn't even make in the first place.

If they were to draw the entire scene from scratch by hand, that would be a different matter, but this...this is kind of illegal, lol. It's also setting a bad and dangerous precedent that it's okay to steal a screenshot from someone or something, alter it with Photoshop, claim it as your own work, and somehow demand that people pay you for it.

Yes, it would. Drawing what they want to showcase by hand, with their own entire toolkit of artistic skill would be different, the style WOULD BE DIFFERENT. They would be spending far more time and effort into drawing and recreating an ENTIRE scene from scratch than they would be lightly spending a few hours doing some editing work in Photoshop using a pre-existing screenshot from the game that they don't have to touch other than pasting down another image on top of it.

It's not illegal to draw fan-art using reference shots as tools to help. It's illegal to steal something that has a direct copyright on it and looks EXACTLY as it does, for example, the background of Costa Del Sol, and pass it off as your own entire work of art.

I've been in the art industry for over 12 years, it's illegal, and it can get you in trouble if the company feels like being that petty. I bet you think taking stuff from Google isn't illegal either.

You really need to re-read what I said, and go look up copyright law while you're at it.

It's illegal to edit a screenshot of copyrighted works, as it is illegal to draw it, or even write about it.
I don't care who you are, or how long you say you've been working in a field completely irrelevant to law, but it's stupid to make a stink about this particular commission when every single fan art that has been posted is equally as infringing on copyright.

Furthermore, copyright is different from trademarks, so Square Enix doesn't explicitly need to defend screenshots taken from their game or risk losing the copyright. Just in case you thought that was a thing.

Again, SE isn't going to crack down on a small time artist and editor that is making players happy and potentially sparking more interest in the game.

I think it depends on what the artist is getting paid for exactly. I've seen other artists getting paid for touching up models from existing games before as portraits and profile pictures. It's usually the person purchasing the commission who provides a screenshot of their model. In this case, I don't know.

It still wouldn't be that hard to crop the bottom few pixels to remove the obvious COPYRIGHT BY SQUARENIX watermark on the image. Especially for content that *doesn't exist* in the game to keep people from assuming that exists and getting their hopes up.

If you think they should have cropped it, fair enough. Maybe they should have. To me, it's pretty obvious it's a repaint/edit. All I'm saying is it's not uncommon for people to charge for repaint/edits. It doesn't necessarily mean the artist is charging for the character model itself or background.

If you crop out their copyright, it becomes copyright infringement.
